Hi. I saw an online store carrying Spydercos that he claims are collector models. What does this mean? From the looks of the knife, it looks exactly like the regular production models. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Some of the regular production models of the past are pretty collectible now, but I suspect he means the knives he has for sale are Collector's Club numbered. The only difference between them and the regular production pieces is the CC number etched on the blade.

I'd agree that's the most probably meaning.

Spyderco has a subscription service where you agree to buy either one of every model that is produced, or one of every variation. This can get expensive. :) Some people subscribe and then sell off the ones they don't want to keep. The blades are marked with a unique collector serial number. The number on the blade is the only difference from a standard production model.

thanks for your replies but pls elaborate. I still don't understand. Sorry. I'm still learning.
Spyderco has a Collectors Club. If you join it, you are assigned a number and obligated to take one of every new knife in certan categories. There are several levels, some only get brand new models, some get every variant of every model, some get somewhere in between. Each knife you receive is stamped with your number. These photos shows four Collectors Club numbered Tasman Salts...

The black serrated version was considered the "main" version, so all club members would have received one. The V suffix on the three others indicates they were "variants". This page I put together may answer some of your questions.

Thank you for your explanation. I get it now. I googled "Spyderco club" and came to a topic in Spyderco.com. Even at bronze level, you will end up with a lot of knives considering how much Spyderco releases new designs! Amazing! Thanks again :)

Are you forced to pay MSRP when joining the club? Or do you get them shipped to your favorite dealer and pay their rates?

When you set up a Collectors Club account with Spyderco you're required to specify a dealer, and Spyderco contacts that dealer to insure they've agreed to handle your account. So the normal drill is to set up a relationship with a dealer before you even begin the process. Not all will want to be bothered, since they can get stuck with knives if you disappear. For that reason, some will only do it for an established customer. Pricing arrangements are between you and that dealer, as is the amount of time you have to pay for each knife. AFAIK most charge the same as they would charge any other customer for the same knife. While it pays to shop around, it also pays to remember that deep discounters have a very poor track record for staying in business.
