I had lost the pictured knife till a few days ago. I was looking for it to include in the history of the 312 as an odd-ball. I was going to add a picture to the just finished history on the 312 Bird Knife but instead thought about it a while. I was going to just post photos in picture thread but I try to leave someones new picture up several days so people can see the photographers name in the forum page before I cover them up with new photo. Nice photo Longbow.... So instead here is a thread from my thoughts. This is a non-factory modification, nor is it a modification from a "known" knifesmith. What would you classify it as ?Odd-ball is what I call stuff like this. Is there a place for knives like this in your collection listing other than odd-ball or modified ?
Is is worth putting all odd-balls in a knives history ?

Now part 2 of this thread. I really like the knife.....it feels good in my hand. I bought it off the bay, it was a home modification as there are file marks on one bolster and the spring rivet is flattened. I call it a SlimBird. Someone has taken out a spring, the bird hook blade and the center brass liner. It is an odd ball but dang it I like it. Only one blade but it slides down in a back pocket beside a wallet like a dream. Anyway photos for your enjoyment and real questions concerning collecting knives..........Now on the look for a cheap 321, I visualize pearl scales.......P.S. This would work on a 313 Muskrat with the skinning blade sharpened down also and that is more common than a cheap bird knife....makes a great LE officer hide-out knife, you remember Clint Eastwood taping the switchblade to his leg.................................................... 300Bucks

Thanks 300Bucks. The reason I posted the picture today is, I found the Kalinga in the drawer and thought maybe I should sell this knife, because my collection is mainly "110s". I felt it in my hand and thought wow this feels and looks nice so it wound up in the picture not on the sale block. Even modified knives can be a conversation piece in a collection. I am sure some people's favorite knives are modified to fit themselves.

...You know...I'd buy that modified one before I'd buy the regular one...Go figure...:p...

I would put the "odd balls" in the history once you have the true knives well defined and discussed.

People do a lot of odd modifications to them and to speak to each one would be far more work than what the factory has put out.

Just my 2 cents. For my next trick, I'll get a can of every color Krylon Wal-Mart puts out and release my "limited" line of Bucks. Then, demand you put them in the history:D

I look for odd/rare 112's ...Factory,RRR,re-blades,any kind of custom. To me they are more intresting to collect than just factory varations.,.There are a few 'slimed down' 112's out there and I'll pick one up when I run into a nice one and the Buck budjet come together....Yep thats a keeper. mods poorly done are not...

well lets put it this way
david Yellowhorse was not working for buck when he did his mods but does now
Leroy Remer {{a Buck Custom Shop knife smith}}
still does repairs for some Buck employees that only he can do.
Brian Mac Machinnney did his mods on the 124 while he worked for Buck
Wile Bill Cody still works for Buck
these folks i and a other BCCI displayers show these knives..
my personal thought is like signed base balls.. does it really mater when it was signed?
i for one i would be inclined include these in history under "Buck Customs"
......
as to mods like ghosttown ... or home mods like my rubber bucky..
well ...
perhaps a short pictorial of what others have done but with the foot note that
positively labels them as "unauthorized by Buck" work
