Hi, new to the forum and to Spydie collecting. I think I read in a post that Spyderco had a collectors' program which offered collectors an opportunity to preorder special "low numbered" version of new models. Any info on this?

Hi ShaolinBill,

welcome to the forums.
Spyderco has it's own home-page. There you can find the e-mail addresses you need to get the info about the collector's program.
Basically you subscribe to the collectors program and get a serial number <200 and then you get one of each new model, before they the rest of us ELU's can buy them. You have to take each (full retail)or you'll loose your number.

If you pick a number you have to buy all the knives since the last collector quit buying.
The first 200 are usually serrated, but you can get a a variant (=plain-edge with your serial number and a V on the blade).

I would love to have one of each, if there was not this lack of money. :)

Hope this helps

Greetings

Red, thanks for the welcome and the info.

Does anyone have an opinion if owning these low numbered special editions adds real value to the knife or is it more a vanity thing for the collector? For example, owning 5 or 10+ knives all with the same serial number??

This is strictly my opinion so take it for what it is worth (that and a nickle will get you a nice warm cup of JACK SQUAT). I think that a collection with all the same serial numbers would have a slight advantage in value that one with mixed numbers. However, individually, I do not think it helps a knife's value. I also think it is a pride thing owners have about all their knives being "theirs" due to all having the same number. I could not afford to do this with all the knives Spyderco puts out. I do have a vanity thing that I would like to be able to do someday regarding numbered knives. I want to get a set of green handled, satin-finish Emerson Commander and Mini-C with the same numbers on both. I would really like them ot have the serial 666 (might get blasted for this one) but I would take whatever number was availible. It might happen, but probably not. Spyderco at least gives loyal customers a way to make it happen even though it is rather pricey.

I'm a member of the spyderc collector's club and All the knives I get are numbered #19 I was lucky got a low number. I usually get all variations and colors when avalible It's the sure way to get the rare ones and low run models. Plus you get to know what's coming out a little sooner than the public as you have to pick which versions you want.
Call Kelly Williams @ Spyderco 1 800 525 7770 if you are serious she is a busy women so don't bother her unless it's important to you.
