For the last 34 years I have made a living carving ancient ivory and bone and selling mammoth tusks and ivory. I have delt with collectors of all sorts. From buyers of the finest and largest tusks and fossils to the retail worker who saves for weeks to buy a carving.
I suspect a majority of members on this forum are collectors of some sort. What motivates you as a collector? Last week I helped collector ship a very large mammoth tusk.He had only recently started collecting fossils. He bought two tusks and sold one ar a profit to help pay for the other. He has a extensive collection of military items that he acquired in the same manner.I have a collection of old trucks and about all the knives and guns I need. I am more of a acumulor than a collector.

I am in love with a few things-

on collecting craftsmanship, it is just that-- the soul of the creator is what I am collecting when I pick up a sword, or carved piece of ivory -- I am buying your effort, your time on this earth, your moments. I feel that time I like to think when I hold an antique, or a modern piece, even a mineral or bone. that some of the time this is why I love collecting, because I love history and the natural world and human effort, I want to see them all the time in their best examples.

I'm more of an accumulator than a collector myself. I have old coins, knives, axes, hatchets, hammers, swords, spears, old tools and a bunch of golf discs (Frisbee golf).
