Collets - ER40 VS. ER32 or ER25

Sorry for all the machining questions lately. But I'm on a roll. ;)

Beside size, is there a reason to choose one over the other?

I want to use them with a R8 holder so that I can also use a drill chuck and not have to move my round column mill up or down. So I guess ER40 is bigger and the holder would be closer to the size of my drill chuck, length wise. Makes sense?

Thanks for your help.

Drilling with a long extension from the spindle is harmless because the force is in line with the spindle. Milling with a long extension doesn't work well because the force is perpendicular to the spindle, which will cause larger forces on your spindle bearings and more problems with flexibility.

Being that it is already a collet spindle, a different approach to your problem would be to buy a more complete R8 collet set that would cover your drilling needs. Collets often be used from their nominal size down to about 1/32" under their nominal size (never over), so a complete collet set might do what you're wanting for similar $

Nathan, that is the approach I was already taking. Money is tight but I am slowly buying collets to fit my drilling needs. You see I have a really crappy right shoulder and I thought that this might help with the quickchange thing. But now that you mention it, I'll have to remove the holder to put in the drill chuck anyway so no help there. Why didn't I think of that. Guess I got excited about the idea of not having to reach up there so often. Not much left holding the shoulder together. :(

Thanks for your help and for saving me some money. I need it for that kiln.

Some folks put a power draw bar on these things. I use one on one of my taller mills where the drawbar is out of reach. It is basically an air impact tool installed on top of the mill that comes down and runs the drawbar in an out.

The only time I ever use anything besides a quick change collet is when I have an odd ball drill bit that doesn't tighten up in the nearest collet size. Then I have a chuck with a straight shank that I put in a collet. I might have to raise the hear then, but that's easier than loosening the draw bar etc. But, then I am not making super precision parts

Thanks Jim. I'll still look into the quickchange eventually. Just that money is tight right now (seems like it always is :()
