OK I did not need another axe, but I just had to save it. Found a very nice Collins Michigan pattern at the flea market this morning, it was marked at 10 bucks, I offered 5, we settled on 8. It just needed a a little TLC so I brought it home spent a couple of hours tinkering in my garage and now I have yet another single bit Michigan pattern axe. Does this longing ever end??? At least they are not near as expensive as my other addictions.

I pulled the head cleaned off the crud with a wire brush.

A couple of light passes across the belt grinder fixed minor mushrooming. The a quick degrease and a coat of Rustoleum Fire Engine Red.

While the paint was drying it was time to work on the handle, I fixed a small blowout at the end of the fawns foot from beating the loose head back on.

Rehung the head with a new wedge, sealed it all up with bee's wax, and put on a new edge. I am going to keep the heat shrink tubing protector for now.

Nice axe! Can I ask is there anything special that you do to treat the surface prior to painting? Also, what king of paint do you find is best for bare steel or iron, or do you prime it at all? I'm interested in painting a future restore and also a disassembled and cleaned vice, and this info would be great. That looks awesome, really slick.

To prep the surface I scrub it with 320 grit wet/dry and hot soapy water, then wipe down with acetone. I have been using Rustolium products for years, they have alway performed very well. I started with a light coat of primer then two very thin coats of red. I let it bake in the sun for a few hours and it should be hard as a rock and ready to use by next weekend.

That's a great refurb. it looks brand new and ready for another 60+ years. Very nice work.
