This weekend I was looking for something to weigh down a project I was gluing up, so I went scrounging around the shop. Under my workbench, covered in a thick layer of dust was a double bit axe head. My dad built the shop about 15 years or so ago, and left a lot of "junk" when I bought the house and workshop from my folks. I've likely seen the axe head hundreds of times and never paid any attention to it. I didn't weigh it, but it can't be much over 2 lbs. Sorry the pics aren't the best. The head is marked "COLLINS" and has some surface rust in spots, but appears to be very solid otherwise.
My dad was a professional tree trimmer for years. I can remember most weekends as a kid helping drag and load brush from trees he trimmed. I started running a chainsaw at around age 9 and started splitting wood around that same time. I don't know if this axe head was one I might have used, or if dad found it or bought it somewhere through the years. Although I have used axes quite a bit through the years, I always just used whatever we had around and never bothered to pay attention to what I was using. If it had a handle and a head, I swung it when I needed to cut or chop something.
I'm hoping some of you folks might help me identify what type or pattern this axe head is. Also, if you can help me with what length of handle would be appropriate for it, that would be appreciated as well.

A bit of searching leads me to believe this is a Michigan pattern. Anyone?

I agree. It's a Michigan or a Wisconsin pattern. The two patterns are so close, it's hard to tell them apart. Maybe you could call it a Yooper pattern and make everyone happy and confused.

EDIT: I took another look at your double bit. I noted the sharper or more square edge on the toes of your head, that would actually make it more of a Western Pennsylvania pattern the a MI or WI pattern. Just my thoughts, Tom

Tom

P.S. Take a look at Collins at YesteryearsTools .com for info on your Collins double bit.
