Hey all, I'm new to the forum and I just picked up this jersey pattern collins axe from the local flea market. Can anyone tell me about how old she is? There is markings on the butt reading: Collins & Co. Hartford / Cast steel Warranted... There is also a marking in the middle of the axe "LFD A 98", does anybody know what that stands for?

Pictures don't come up. FD is usually Fire Department and A could be Division and 98 year of delivery or inventory number or something along that line. But what on earth would an FD be doing with a Jersey? Many years back I worked for a summer with Ontario Dept of Lands & Forests and they were often referred to as LFD although their stuff was not stamped as such.

A Collins Hartford will be from 1965 or earlier. That's when they closed up and sold the name to the Mann Edge Tool Co. and the operation moved to Lewistown PA. Anything from Hartford is decent - better if it's a 'Legitimus'. Best is a 'Bonded'.

I've actually been thinking about those cast steel axes in conjunction with the 'hardened poll' axe discussions we've been having. A cast steel axe is homogeneous - all one steel. There's no reason why a blacksmith couldn't harden the poll of a cast steel axe to match the hardened bit.

Better if it is Bonded, best if it it Legitimus, super duper best pre Legitimus.

Unless you're a paid user at bladeforums you have to upload your images somewhere else and then link to them here. Try photobucket......etc.
