Today I went to this old hardware store on the out skirts of town and they had Collins Axes. They must be "new old stock" or something, I thought Collins Axes were kind of rare, or am I wrong?. Are they made in USA? I looked and it didn't say what country it was made in.

New collins aren't the same as the old ones. I believe they're made in mexico now and from what I hear they aren't very good as far as axes go.

Oh ok, so the ones they have must be Mexico made. they looked pretty brand new and only 26 bucks.

That would be a council tool axe. Better to spend $25 on that then the Collins.

I bought a 3.5 lb headed Collins axe and was not impressed.... It wouldn't take much of an edge and the edged it did take dented up on some hard wood I tried to chop. I just use it for splitting logs for the stove now and it works pretty well for that.

Agreed, but it is $26, new and made in neither Mexico nor China. Read the quoted post for that context.

This is one of the few exceptions to the rule, and a phenomenal buy. Some of the basic Council stuff is a smokin' deal if you don't mind tuning it up a bit out of the box.

If not the new Collins line, it might be a Mann Edged Tool Co axe, they had control of the brand till about 10 years ago, or so. These were decent American axes, and they still show up as old stock sometimes. Usually with the red big C, Homestead, or Commander labels.

I picked up a new Collins double bit axe at a hardware store. It's made in Mexico and the edge will need major work before I even attempt to use it. I just started sharpening and it may be awhile before I'm done.

I've had a few import hatchets that while not the best were easily worth their purchase price. The handle on your's looks a little suspect (grain-wise) but it may still last for years. Just watch the overstrikes.
