...a handle opening of 1 1/4" wide and 2 3/4" long...

I've seen a pricy 2-5/8" x 1" being sold on "that auction site" (can currently be found by searching for "competition axe handle"). With a big enough wooden wedge, this size at the end of the handle could theoretically work for you as long as there was sufficient "shoulder" on the handle for the head to rest on (larger than the bottom of the eye).

Other options include getting a handle custom made, or better yet, making one yourself.

Let us know, if you would, what solution you end up with.

If you go the route of making your own, maybe check your local high-end cabinet shops. I have seen some really nice hickory cabinets before. Or maybe see it there is a hardwood supply house as well. A band saw and 1" trimmer plane will be your best friend.

Or get a nice Louisville Slugger and make an ash handle.
