I recently purchased an old Collins hatchet for $12. It was in pretty rough shape but I knew it still had plenty of life left in it. I decided to give it a little make over. I stripped all of the rust and finish down to the bare steel, cold blued it, sharpened and polished the edge to a mirror finish, and rehandled it with a Tennessee Hickory handle.

Here are the before photos:

All in all this project cost me $21 and I feel like I ended up with a very high quality hatchet. The rounded pull would make this little guy an ideal hunting/camp hatchet. I hope you guys enjoyed this!

I looks great. I love the grain on the handle and you definitely ended up with a better quality hatchet by far than $21 would have gotten you at the hardware store.

That's a really great resto! And I agree...way better quality than $20 will get you at a store.

Great workmanship on your Collins. Another one saved for future generation. Simply SWEEEET!!!

You didn't toss the old handle, I hope. The nice touch of the leather thong loop through the handle hole is still missing on the new one. Very nice though that you took the time to get one of these golden oldies back on the road.

Unfortunately I did toss the old one. You cant really tell by the photos but it had a huge crack down the middle of it, from the lanyard hole up for a couple of inches. I could have glued it back and hoped for the best but in my opinion once its cracked its structural integrity has been compromised and its time for a new one.

Just my opinion though!
