I've been trading collectibles with a friend of mine, and he just found this at a junk shop in CT. I'm not knowledgeable enough yet to pick out the nuances of similar styles, and I'm wondering exactly what this is. Is it just a basic boys axe head, or is there a more specific name for it? Lacking the "USA" on it, I'm guessing it's a Mexican Mann? First pic is after just getting enough rust off to find the Collins, the second is pretty much cleaned up, ready to start sharpening.

I wouldn’t think it was made in México. It’s not a Legitimus without the crown and hammer marking but if it has some convex to the cheeks it would make a good axe when all is said and done.

The “Collins in a box” was used for quite a while.

Would be a basic Dayton pattern.
If you browse through the it followed me home thread you'll see lots of examples of vintage American made axes and will get a good idea of what characteristics generally identify an older pre 1970's axe.
There's just kind of a general path to the industry of axes that is usually common across manufacturers , certain aspects just kind of just started disappearing around the same time
