I haven't seen much mention of this aspect of Hudson Bay axe history:
Hudson Bay axes made by Collins (and painted green) were used by the U.S. Army, and designated the "M 1950 Camp Axe". This replaced the earlier "Camp Axe" (which was not a true Hudson Bay pattern, sourced from L.L. Bean beginning in 1942).
[As mentioned in the article U.S. MIlitary Axes, Part II, by Carter Rila, The Chronicle, June 1986, page 23]
Some possible evidence of these:

Frank, any ridges in the eye?
Looks like the U.S. Army's M-1950 Camp Axe.
Do you know how long was the handle?
Some clues from coloradowildman, from a post he made at another forum:

Has anyone here ever seen a US Army\Collins Legitimus Hudson Bay Axe? There's a local antique store that has one and it even has a US issue Hudson Bay axe sheath. The handle looks to be about 22-23" long and the head is stamped both "US" and "Collins Legitimus". The head has faded army green paint and the head itself is in excellent condition. The handle looks crummy because of all the chipped army green paint but didn't look rotted or damaged...
Beavertooth has a 24" Hudson Bay handle available on their website
As to where to find a ready-made 24" handle for a Hudson Bay head, there's at least one place that's selling them (cspoutdoors dot com), but they are marked "Snow & Nealley" and aren't cheap.
