I recently came into possession of an old cruiser axe (double-bitted, 2-2.5# head, 27" handle) stamped

COLLINS
LEGITIMUS

in a rectangle, and although it's a bit worn, what appears to be an arm holding an axe, rising out of a crown.

Can anyone date this axe? I can't seem to find many reference pages for Collins.

Thanks,

Dan

I can't give a date range off of the top of my head. I'll check some of the books and get back to you.

I CAN tell you that Collins used the Legitimus stamp to denote its top line of tools. The steel in your axe should be very good, and given a little work, should perform as well or better than the GBs, Wetterlings, etc. on the market today.

Any chance of some pics?

Be happy to, Chuck. I'm going to take all sorts of pics this week and I'll put them up.

I came up with a very nice Legitmus single-bit at the flea market today. I'll post it too.

collins legitimus is good stuff.

treasure it, like old griswold cast iron, it's better for the age on it. the longer you keep it the smarter you get. ;)
