Hey all. I was able to find a few US made Collins machetes and I ordered the 22" 323 model. Does Collins still manufacture these? If not when did they stop? From what I understand these are really good machetes, I'm just a little unsure of exactly what I bought as I don't know what year the machete was made and I was wondering if there are differences in quality of the old ones vs. the "new" ones.

Thanks for the help!

Also, if anyone is interested I can tell you where I got mine.

EDIT: I hope this is an ok place for this. I decided to post here because I know that machetes are a very useful tool in a survival situation and I figured that you all here would be most likely to be able to help me. If this is not the appropriate place I appreciate that this will be moved.

Do you have pics? The USA ones are the oldest ones, followed by their South American production ones (though quality was nearly identical between the two). In the 60's (I think) Nicholson (the file company) bought them out and the quality went down. You can still find the Nicholson/Collins machetes for around $6 online but they aren't the same as the Collins of old. Still great for the money though! Collins themselves went under around 1965.

I'd love to know where you got yours--shoot me an email. ;)

Collins & Company was founded in 1826 as axe manufacturers and sold their first machete in 1845; they went out of business in 1966. They're hard to find and still very good tools. I know that Imacasa makes a "Colin style" machete that's inspired by the Collins machete, and they state as such, but it's not a Collins.

MacheteSpecialists' photos of the 24" and 14" Colin-style machetes...

From the little bit of research I've done, I have a wild, speculative theory about those Collins that are on that site. I believe they may have been found in a warehouse at Gitmo as they're scaling back the prison there. They are Army surplus, Cuban models after all. Wild and speculative, and probably false, but it's interesting to think about.

Cool. That sounds like a definite possibility.
