Hello everyone!

I was looking a Böker Barlow as I was looking another Barlow. I love my Queen small Dan Burke Barlow but D2 is sometimes really hard to sharpen. I got Case Dark Molasses Barlow with Spear and Pen Blades so I was looking more traditional barlow with clip and pen blades. My native dealer can't get Böker Barlows but he could get GEC that I have, Case primestag Barlow and Colonel Coon.

I used my google-fu skills and learned that Colonel Coon owner sold his business to W.R. Case and Sons when he retired and around 2006 , Smokey Mountain Knife Works bought the name and current Colonel Coon Knives are manufactured in Queen factories.

So based on this knives should be quite well, especially considering the price point. Steel is probably 420 HC but Colonel Coon barlow is just gorgeous. However this whole thing made me interested in Colonel Coon knives as I haven't heard of them prior today.

if you have experience of Colonel coons, new or old, please share and all pictures are more than welcome. I will make some small brief review when I get mine about 3 weeks.

thanks to all.

I have several original coon knives and have been collecting them for a bunch of years. They are getting harder to come by and are mostly out of my price range now. If you want to see pictures go to (all about pocket knives) web sitethere is a separate forum for Colonel Coon, you can view pictures of my knives in the gallery section look for Cutmyself's gallery. Good luck Tom

looks good but the seller pics could be better. Anyone tried recent production CCs? How's the FF and curious to know who assembled them.

I'm pretty sure the recent CCs are owned by Smoky Mountain Knife Works and made for them by Queen Cutlery Co.

Certainly Queen made. I looked that thing and confirm what Jeff says. I looked all things Colonel Coon had before I bought a Barlow with orange smooth bone handles with spear and clip points. My Colonel Coon Barlow is exampliary of Queen's patchiness: Excellent handles and blade finish, fitting was not so terrific, blade plays and gaps so bad I haven't seen this year but I've seen worse too. So before you get one, make sure one in photo is one you get or ask seller check gaps and blade plays. Steel is very nice, not sure what, box says 440. It took me while to sharpen and ground so sharpness is good. I hope I did not scared you. I really like my Colonel Coon Barlow, but I did not asked seller to check it so I got what I got. I've fixed it though. Bound to be one of my fave knives eventually like all my problem childs have been ;)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Since CC is a production knife I would leave the selection to the off the shelf seller. I'm not especially taken by the name one way or the other as much as the pattern and build. The pattern looks especially well done IMHO with just the right representation, in my way of thinking, which leaves the build in question.

I must say that I like the Queen build up if not so much the blade grind. I'm looking for a slicer.

I should add that I'm looking for a large toothpick that can take a smart edge. Queen definately does it right with the S&M but I'm not sure I can get to that price just yet.

Large toothpick say 4" closed full flat ground with mean slicing capability... Most GEC # 12's go way under $100 shipped. Maybe under $70 if you're lucky. I got saber ground and flat ground Gec toothpicks. Flat ground is pure evil slicing machine! Saber ground is sturdier and very sharp but flat ground is made for slicing. Since GEC uses 1095 carbon steel mostly you will get very mean and keen edge without breaking your elbow like if you would harpen Queen D2 with regular stones...

Colonel Coon?! I'll be honest here: I wouldn't buy one of those just based on the hokey name.

I know right? :barf:

I have to say that I like the profile and scales though. After jumping back and forth to look at pics of Queen and CC it's obvious now who the maker is. I did find a Queen City with the exact profile in 1095 that I like.

I should have used the search function. I found thejamppa's post with the same title as mine :foot: I'm looking forward to seeing pics.

Easily remedied...
