What patterns of knives were popular in north america before the bowie knife? Specificaly during the French and Indian war and the American Revolution? Was there any one pattern dominant durring this period? Thanks.

Patterns that we associate with butcher knives, some thick-bladed, some thin; plain-Jane daggers; "riflemen's knives" having long, single edged blades with spear points; European-style hunting knives and hunting swords; big, plain folding knives.

I'm no expert on this subject, by any means, but if you are interested in seeing some really great period knives (and tomahawks)you have to check out both Daniel Winkler and RMJ Forge. IMHO, both of these makers offers excellant pieces of Americana cutlery history.

*Note-If I have my information correct, Ryan Johnson of RMJ Forge, is quite versed in the French & Indian War period of American history and if you contact him he may be able to further help you with your search. Also, he's a fellow forumite here at BFC so you may see him around some time.;)
