How To Color coming off

Hi Folks,

The brown on the surface, especially at both ends, is coming off, possibly from sun exposure. It's darkest on the left side in the image with the Case shield. Also, the bone is starting to become translucent. I wish it were more opaque, like when I bought it.

I am wondering a few things.

Was this brown burnt on the bone? Or dyed? Or...?

How can I restore it so it looks nice. I've tried stains, paints, etc., on other projects and they never look rights.

And to fight that transparency? Any remedies?

Anyone got some ideas? Many thanks!!!

The bone is soaking up oil. That makes it more translucent.
The bone is "jigged" by cutting a pattern in it, then it's dyed.
I usually recolor jigging with a potassium permanganate solution. Leather dyes work, but often penetrate the bone too much, causing discoloration where you don't want it.
Regardless, it will eventually wear again.

I'm looking on the 'net for this chemical but I only see purple solutions. Is potassium permanganate meant to be purple? I am looking for a nice lightly burnt brown.

Thanks heaps for the response, by the way!

It's purple when applied. It dries to brown.
It may need multiple applications.
I use the powder, and mix it with water until no more will dissolve.
