Color of Sharpening Dust

Ok, kinda a weird question, but, when you sharpen on stones, how does the dust look? Is it just a dull grey color? Or can you see it shine in places if you turn the stone at various angles?

The dust is kinda dark gray. If you see shiny spots on the stone, it may be time to clean it.

Dull gray/blackish is good. Shiny spots are hot spots, points where the stone is totally loaded, to the point where it isn't cutting.
