So after years of talking here on the forums I finally met Beckerhead cf1969 in person about a month ago. Or as I like to call him...Dave.
We planned this easy overnight trip. I chose the location. I have had an elevation problem my whole life. Bit of a curse for someone who lives in Colorado. So I chose the place we went because its only 8000 feet. Its also only a mile hike in to the lake. With a crushed vertebrae and a 40 pound pack, that mile still ended up feeling like 10. Dave is a high elevation hiker. This was a walk in the park to him as I huffed and puffed my way down the trail.
I still ended up suffering elevation sickness, was nauseous, dizzy, light headed and short of breath but did my best to have some fun.
We were at a beautiful location in the mountains west of Boulder in Roosevelt National Forest. I found so many wild resources. We collected fatwood and cooked lots of bacon over the fire. Even with the elevation problems I was having I had a great time!
I carried a BK9 and had a BK14 and Bk15 in my pack. Dave had a BK2, BK17 and Bk24.
I took 280 pictures in 24 hours. Wasn't easy to pick the ones to post here. Hope you enjoy them.
So I will start this with random scenery pictures as we hiked the mile to the lake.
Someone hiking out was taking too long for their dog. Yes this is the trail in front of me. This was the worst part.
Fremont's Geranium.
Huge patches of Rose Hips everywhere. I collected a few handful's. Could have collected hundreds.
Brown Eyed Susan.
False Solomon's Seal.
Wax Currants.
Beautiful mountain with waterfall at the base. During spring and early summer this river and waterfall are much bigger from snow melt. Slows down in late summer but still provides great drinking water all year. I love the colors on this mountainside above the river.
This is the back side of the mountain with the waterfall.
The trail and the river end at the reservoir.
The river running into the reservoir.
Dave's BK17
My BK9 on a fat wood stump. More pictures of what I collected later.
Cro-Van by the fire.
Beer in the river.
Lots of crawdads around. Would have been an easy meal if we needed it.
Speaking of food, we got hungry. First we needed to collect some water for coffee and to refill water bottles for the next day.
Where we collected our water.
Red nalgene is for river water. It goes through he bandanna into the metal bottle for boiling. It really didn't need the bandanna though. I never caught anything visible in the bandanna and the water is crystal clear. Boiled the crap out of it anyway just to be sure.
Before boiling, very clean water.
Boiling
Big bubbles no troubles. I think this is one of the best pictures.
OK. Waters done its time for coffee.
And one of my favorite things to take camping besides a Becker knife. Bacon!
Dave had some MREs. There were pictures of him trying to heat them in the bags they come with but they must have been too old because they wouldn't heat up. The pics of that came out too blurry to use but this one turned out.
Field Expedient MRE.
And breakfast the next day. Coffee and bacon of course.
The fatwood cleaned up and ready to use.
Want to hear that bacon siizzling in the cast iron pan?
Here is a quick 30 second video of it on my Youtube channel. While you are there, please comment or thumbs up if you have the time. Any interaction there is appreciated!
