My sister is going off to be a counsler at camp for a few weeks and asked me to find her an inexpensive pocket knife. Here are the criteria:

>under $40
>colorful handle (anything but black, stainless, or wood)
>under 4" blade (3" would be perfect)
>folder with a pocket clip

She really likes my blue mini grip, yellow Salt-1 and Delica.

Spyderco, Kershaw, and SAK's all have models with variously coloured handles. Does she want a single blade or is a SAK more of a use to her?

A single blade is what she is looking for. Along the lines of a Delica, but a little cheaper...

If she wants small, the Spyderco Ladybug comes in orange and white, The Kershaw Chive in pink. . .(This is off the top of my head.) Both under 40 (I think). You might find the Delica (pink/white) but I think it will be a tad bit more than 40. I can't recall any more at the moment, but a quick look around New Graham, 1SKS, etc. should give you more to go on. Tell your sister to have fun.

It's a shame, but I'm afraid it's a reality of the times we live in: do you know whether the camp will even allow your sister to possess a knife?

Also, I don't like cheap knives for knife newbees because a cheap knife may have a cheap locking mechanism, which is dangerous. They also tend not to open and close as easily as a good knife. That is why you and I spend $$$ on good knives, right? I agree that Spyderco is always a good choice.

The Ladybug is a bit too small I'm afraid. She is allowed to have a knife, I believe the couslers carry them often, this way when stuff needs opening/deanimating, there is someone with a knife instead of putting blades in the hands of the children. She is 20 years old, and has handled and used my knives often. I am looking for a quality blade (for the lock) , but she is short on cash and therefore needs to keep it under $40.

You might look at the Kershaw DWO. It is a simple nailnick opening lockback with a 2 3/8-inch AUS6 blade. Looks similar to the Gerber LST, but the DWO comes in 4 colors.

Runs under $20. Sorry, no clip, but it is very light and would fit in any pocket. (Hard to find colors in quality knives under $40.)_

It will kinda stretch your $40.00 limit, but since she likes your Mini-Grip, how about a Pink one?

+ 10% of the wholesale profits go to Breast Cancer Research.

Sounds to me like she needs your blue Mini-Grip, your Salt 1, or your Delica. :D

Kershaw's Leek, Scallion, and Chive models (progressively smaller from Leek to Chive) come in a multitude of colors and are great choices...my wife carries a Scallion...

That pink mini-grip is one of the best knives on the market. I have the blue one and it totally over-shadows most every other knife I've ever handled. I have owned many SOGs Spydercos and Benchmades and Mini-Griptian is the current champ. Plus It's pink and contributes to breast cancer research, it a no brainer.

I know she is looking for a single blade with a clip but depending on what you pick up if you have anything left over it is always worth looking at the previously enjoyed SAKs over at http://felinevet.sosakonline.com/index.php (not trying to spam, I'll remove if it is a problem). for less than $10 you can get some really great SAKs.

Try the new Buck Redpoint. $21 at Knifecenter and comes in blue and yellow. Has a unique locking system that locks it open and closed.

My wife really likes the pink mini grip I bought her, but there again, it will stretch your budget.

If she's willing to scrounge up a little bit more, have her at least consider a Kershaw Rainbow Leek.

My sister repeatedly attempts to steal mine :(
