I was thinking of buying/finding a 0-120VAC variable transformer and recfifying the output.

Has anyone tried this method yet?

As opposed to buying/building a supply using electronics to control the output.

Al Lawrence (uncle Al) has variac tranformers for sale. They do a good job at ano..
As for the solution. I use coke.. THe cheap off brand .39 cent a bottle stuff .. Spite works also for the folks who prefer clear.. hkakaka
Reactives set up is 0-200 volts 3 amp variable dc..

Take a look!!!

Darrel, do you have to run AL's 0-130 volt ac transformer with a dc rectifier to anodize or can it be used as is? I have a 0-40 volt dc power supply, but I understand the voltage needs to be a lot higher to get the full range of colors. Does anodizing effect the coke or is it still usable for mixing with a little Jack Daniels? We have to establish priorities here.

I just wanted to mention that you guys need to be careful when using variacs, as the output is not isolated from the input (household electrical service). I'm not familiar with anodizing, but if you're connecting one side of the power supply output to a metallic tray, that tray could be energized with respect to true ground under some conditions and could result in a nasty shock if you touch both the tray and another grounded or electrically powered device. One way to fix this potential safety problem is to use an isolation transformer between the outlet and the variac.

The 130 VAC variac, through a full wave bridge rectifier and a large filter capacitor will provide 183.8 VDC. Pretty close to Darrel's specs.

Uncle al's transformer is fine for the job,
a rectifier that will do the job can be purchased at Radio Shack, make sure the voltage rateing of the rectifier is 125v or better(bridge rectifier works best). The necessity of a filter capacitor is questionable, some of the best anodizing I have seen used only the output of the rectifier with no filter. Voltage output will give colors on 6ALV4 from 20v (hard to see) up to the 125v range where the color change stops. As with any electrical device, caution is in order, 125v will bite the heck out of you!!!!! so watch it.
