I'm looking for a decent cheap introduction to slipjoints, and i came across the Colt Canoe with stag handles.the fit and finish is good and the stag looks nice.I know it isnt up to Case standard but does anyone know what the quality is like? Is it ok? Or am i better off buying an opinel?

Colts slipjoints are very good for the price. My redbone Colt Canoe had less blade play, were sharper and had better edge profile than Case Mini Trapper I bought after that.

I've not got one yet, but have heard only good things about Colt knives.
They aren't expensive anyway so you can't really go wrong. Buy it.

Suggest you also take a look at the imported Buck canoe before deciding (especially the the one with the pinned 'wood' handles).

got a colt canoe in black stag last week. f & f are excellent and it is sharper out of the box than 90% of the knives recently bought. love it so much i bought another. got my first one for $19.95 shipped to my door. gave it to a co-worker today to cut some tape bands [duct tape] around a pipe bundle and he said i was "crazy for carring such an expensive knife at work." lol

Then I am incurable insane for carrying $250 custom knife and $220 custom slipjoint :D (once I get them in next 3 weeks)

But I agree, colt has excellent F&F for the price point. Even with double price F&F would be excellent.

I haven`t tried a Colt but i have been buying lots of Rough Riders for 3 years and I find them to be great knives and not just relating to price. Some folks on here have both and say the Colts are better so they must be great knives.

Regards

Robin

I am happy with mine as I am all the "Brown Stag" Colts I have. Fit and finish is great, grinds are excellent, was more than acceptably sharp when it arrived. All the Colts I have bought have been great...

I was also looking at some other options, such as the Buck Canoe and the Buck Companion with dymondwood scales. Are these better options?

Well, I had Buck Canoe and F&F was better in my Colt Canoe. COlt uses Flat ground vs. Buck's Hollow ground if it has any meaning. I just think flat ground is more... traditional. But Buck is very good too.
