HEY I JUST GOT ONE OF THESE I HAVEN'T GOT TO TAKE IT OUT AND PLAY YET, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE PRETTY WELL BUILT AND ITS A HECK OF ALOT OF FUN CLICKING THE BLADE WHILE IM WATCHING THE TV. WIFE GETS A LITTLE TICKED THOUGH. ANYONE HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THIS THING GOOD OR BAD?

bushman, welcome to Bladeforums!

I've got the CSAR myself. It is a tough little guy, isn't it? It will also take a pretty good edge on the Sharpmaker. Since it is a gravity knife, which is often classified along with switchblades as illegal, be careful where you wave it around.

It is actually a German Army paratroop knife, the modern issue version developed from an original WW II model.

I have one of the originals with the safety blade, with a "gut-hook" for cutting seatbelts with the hook towards the cutting edge of the blade, and a nice blunt tip. It is pretty darned fun. I love the fold out spike! It makes a great ice pick when the need arises. Mine also has a Tungsten tip in the handle for breaking glass, and the whole thing sits in the glove box of my Saturn. I've used it to cut wild-flowers for my wife:D It also has the bright orange nylon handle, so shouldn't cause any problems if seen by police, as there can be no confusion as to it's purpose. Definitely not a "weapon".

Does that make it a "daisy-cutter"? Maybe we should issue that model in Afghanistan. :D

I was wondering if anyone knew where to get hold to the orange handled rescue model? I've contacted the manufacturer directly, who promptly blew me off, and I've looked all over the web with no results. Looks like a cool little knife. Any help is appreciated!

Was that Eickhorn-Solingen who blew you off?

Send them an email to see if they can locate a U.S. Distributor for you.

I once contacted them (by email) to find out if I could get one of the Pointy blades for my orange one. They quoted me a price, and it would have cost me just as much money to have it shipped from Germany, as it would to buy the Colt version. Not that I'm complaining, just was a little surprised. They were pretty quick with an answer, too.

I actually got mine off of BladeAuction.com a couple of years ago, for $40. I haven't seen them since Colt started having them made with their name on them.

Runs with Scissors, they are by no means little! They have quite a heft to them; very bulky for the amount of blade you have compared to the handle. Email me, if you are REALLY interested. I might be convinced to let mine go.

El Cid, My wife just called to let me know that your package has arrived! I'm almost ready to take off work early just so I can go open it! I'll email you after I've had a chance to play with the knife.

Thanks, DD

Dan is right, they are hefty knives. Large handle, and lots of blade wobble, but such is the way of things with these gravity knives. The good thing is, you never have to worry about the blade closing up on your fingers. ;)

Thanks for the update Dan. :)

YUP! that would the knife, and they would be the ones! I'd dropped them two emails in the past, the first one got a rather...codenscending reply explaining to me that the model with the hook is only for rescuers, and to basically run along little boy... and the second email (the one wehre i told them forthe second time that I'm an Emergency Medical Technician) was never replied to. If it was a more expensive knife I'd have gone ahead and given an equal blow-off, But since it's an expendable for use in the field I would still like to get one.

since I'm editting anyways...:D Yeah, I've gotten to handle the Colt models, and they are a handful, but...I got pretty large forepaws, so it all works out pretty well. The blade play could take some getting used to, admittedly though.

I bought one recently for $49+change from Pioneer Valley Knife.www.pvknife.com .......very good folks they are.I haven't taken mine apart to see about the blade wobble(and probably wont)but I'm betting they could be adjusted some without affecting reliability.Eickhorn also makes a black bladed model which would be nice.

man what we won,t do for our kids for christmas. i just traded my csar for a very nice telescope for my daughter. do you think they will ever know the sacrifices we make for them. anyway i made out like a badit on the trade and knife i can replace for 39.95 at merry christmas everyone :D

The Eickorn-Solingen site says their paratrooper knife's blade will retract into the handle if the point hits anything. Is the Colt version the same in this respect? It's a nice safety feature in some respects, but it's also very limiting in my opinion.

The blade on the Eickhorn version was designed to collapse into the handle as a safety measure for paratroopers, however, the Colt version is not.

The links for the Colt CSAR are really cool an' stuff, but...would anyone know links for the orange handled models with the hooked blade, or....am I missing something here? thanks!
