Anyone used a knife with these? Looks like they wouldn't even cut any better. Supposedly you don't need a special sharpener for them which leads me to believe you would sharpen the whole thing like a plain edge, but if this is the case the insides of the slots wouldn't be sharp and snag on fibrous things like nylon rope. Gimmick or not? I noticed them in the SMKW '03 Christmas catalog on p. 70.

Hi Ragnarok.(Interesting choice for a name).

Those Colt folders are definately a gimmick. I've seen several with those lasercut serrations and they are a joke. They're just for looks in my opinion with no practical effect on cutting. They wouldn't be very useful in Valhalla. ;)

If you do a search, consensus is they're a joke.

The funny thing is in some catalogs it says right in the ad "Not for cutting fiberous materials".

I think those knives may be manufactured by Eickhorn-Solingen who also makes the Colt Search and Rescue knife (the German paratrooper knife, actually). As you can see on their website, they also use those laser-cut serrations.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Guess my initial impession was pretty close. I wasn't interested in buying one but it was just bugging me wondering whether they worked or not. Thanks again.

Cosmic - I got the nick from the name of a tour put on by the band GWAR. The whole "End of the World" theme. Quite a show they put on!

The word is, the lazer cut serrations tend to clop up in actual use, so I would stick with "real" serrations, like the classic Spyderco serrations if you need that type of grind.
