Columbia river crkt edgie 2 self-sharpening knife 6444b

I guess it grinds the edge every time the blade folds into the handle. The steel is very soft and tough 420J2. Seems like a gimmick to me.

I picked up one of the original version on sale a couple of years ago as a curiosity.

And yes, it grinds the edge each time the knife is opened/closed (the edge is chisel ground IIRC).

The one I've got might make a good box-cutter, but it's non-locking and hasn't seen much/any real use.

It's an interesting gimmick rather than a real solution (or at least the original was) as far as I'm concerned.

Another vote for "gimmick".

(Also, posting links to active auctions is usually frowned upon since it could be construed as deal-spotting (even though I don't think that was your intention).)

I saw a similar concept many years ago on a fixed blade sheath. It had 2 tiny crock sticks forming a V (on a spring) so every time you pulled the knife out or pushed it into the sheath, the edge stroked across the crock sticks.

If your standards for "sharp" were low enough, this device was impressive.

the idea of a "self sharpining" knife is sorta the holy grail for some and removes half the fun for the rest of us. if the OP was wondering if this is worthwile as an experiment, I have used my "original version" for a while. It cuts well enough for most daily tasks. I would not buy it again mind you, but it does well enough for somebody who will absolutly not ever sharpen thier "pocketknife". I like the blade shape but this particular blade is both pretty soft and pretty thick. It develops chips or rolls along the length that the built-in diamond rod wont remove. the edge is rather "rough" or "serated" and really tears the material rather than cuting cleanly. I think most people would be better served with a SAK (think thin) even without sharpening the blade (certainly better steele).

WOW- a post from over a year ago. So ok, I stand by my post but would like to add that the blade size znd shape plus the lack of a lock make this a very sheeple friendly tool and it does still see pocket time in my rotation.

It works great as a low-cost gift to people you know won't be able to sharpen their own knives.

For us it's a useless gimmick, for them it's magic.

I just bought 1 today for 10 dollars. Kinda goofy looking. Think I'll give it as a gift.
