I recently came across the Combat Elite (I think Wilson Tactical now?) Carbon Fiber Knife. Pictures here:

I'm planning on buying this knife for SD, so I'd like to know how effective carbon fiber is. I read somewhere a while back that carbon fiber doesn't have an edge, it has micro-serrations, or something along that line. I tried searching threads on carbon fiber on blade forums, but the server refuses to let me search :grumpy:. The reason I like this knife is because of its 1.4oz weight, which is extremely light for a 5inch blade knife! Most 3 inch folders are around 3oz! So anybody have any input on carbon fiber, or this knife? It can be bought for $140 in case you're wondering.

If you plan on being anywhere that you'd need anything that big and menacing, all I can say is move or bone up on your running skills.

It looks like a cool knife knife just to have, but to carry one outside of Iraq or Afganistan, I just don't know ....

If you realy need a SD knife cary a real (steel) knife, don't get me wrong I love that dagger it looks great and the fact that it is SO light is neat, but if my life/limb is on the line enough for me to draw a knife to defend myself I need it to be able to do any thing.
Also I think that the fact that it is CF will get you unwanted attention from any LEO that discovers that you have an "invisable" blade. I belive the only folks that "need" thoes are Narc agents and other undercover agents as well as EOD teams, but for the rest of us it will bee seen as a "evil" weapon. however if you like it and have ther funds, shoot the world is your oyster.

Does carbon fiber set off metal detectors? If not then the entire point of that knife is probably that it can be taken through them without detection. That's probably why that model is called "Stealth".

If you want a good tough knife with a sharp edge get one made from steel.

No, carbon fiber does not set off metal detectors. If you want something like this without paying $140, make it yourself. A sharpened credit card with the right technique can be lethal IMHO. For $140, I'd rather get a decent regular knife.

You can get slightly smaller knives of G-10 or Zytel that work as well, or even make one of G-10 as large as you like.

As far as function goes, wood would probably work as well ... go for plywood for a toothy edge.

Price doesn't really matter to me that much. The inner mall-ninja in me likes this knife :o. It's super light, looks cool :D, and is relatively thin. Just as long as it's capable of making a damaging cut, it should be enough to retaliate in self defense. I own a few steel fixed knives and the weight and handle size is not comfortable for EDC, which is why I'm looking into this knife.

I have to walk 3 blocks from my bus stop to my work place, and I've seen thieves steal things in broad daylight. It would be hard to run or fight (physically) in dress clothes and dress shoes, so a knife is my only option in case of anything. I have no intention of carrying this knife past metal detectors though. Does anybody have any firsthand experience with carbon fiber? Or does anybody have any other recommendations for a light/thin knife?

Esav Benyamin: I might look into G-10 if its better. Do you know where I can get G-10 knives?

It looks like a knife, but is it a knife? Or is it an expensive, cool looking, pointy stick?

I can't see using it in any theater of war except for some sort on non-magnetic probe. Probably something out there far cheaper and better for that job though.

Most pointy "double sided" daggers like that are terribly dull on the edges, useful only for poking. I'd never carry something like that (but it'd make a cool safe knife). If that blade is actually made of CF it will dull and chip instantly, CF is extremely brittle and weak.

If you're going to spend $140 on a SD knife get a real one, like an Emerson CQC or Commander, or a Spyderco Military. That silly thing looks like it was made to appeal to MallNinjas and wannabes, especially with the words "combat" and "elite" in its name.

Esav beat me to the punch. Why don't you try a CS "grivory" sgian dbhu for $13 first, it weighs less than an ounce, has a 4" blade and is mighty pointy. Plus it's not double-edged; if you get caught by the cops with that CF dagger you will be facing charges for sure. Plus I suspect that the grivory can be made sharper than the CF since there are no fibers to interrupt the bevel.
