Hello all, this is my first post. I bought an Emerson Combat Karambit from Smokey Mountain Knife Works a few days ago. It came in the mail tonight and I ripped open the package as if I was seven years old on Christmas again. I must admit, its a mighty fine knife. Everything on it is flawless, well, almost everything. After a few minutes of inspection I got to the edge itself. It has more than one bevel angle? I tried to take some pics but I cant post pics yet evidently. The different blade angle starts about 3/4 of an inch from the tip and its about an inch long. There are also some "wavy" portions near the end of the blade. Its paper cutting sharp but I was rather concerned I had been sent a previously purchased, sharpened, and then returned knife. Anyone have any input?

Congrats on your purchase! Its hard to picture what you're describing.Create a photobucket account. Its free and you will be able to post pics. It is the easiest way to post them in my opinion.

The first one shows it a little better, like I said its kinda hard to do with a laptop. Don't mistake this as a complaint about the knife either, its rock solid, sturdy, comfortable, and I am quite pleased. I just don't want to be out of a warranty because I was sent a used knife (also going to be rather pissed if I payed full price for a used knife too). I don't mind putting a new bevel on it, obviously Id prefer not to, but for the quality of the knife I can do a little work. I will admit though I'm at a bit of a loss as to how I'm going to do it. The only stones I have are bench stones?

What's the date on the blade? The grind does look funny but the picture quality is not the best. I have not heard a good thing about the company you purchased the knife from either.

I would try to get better pictures and contact Emerson tomorrow. The point and the grind do not look right to me. Sharpening an Emerson does not void the warranty.

Doesnt look right. Spyderco sharpe maker would take care of it or send it to Emerson. Personally, i'd sharpen it myself.

I would guess that some dolt tried to sharpen it, screwed it up, and sent it back to SMKW. I would call Emerson and get their opinion.

I have a 2004 Karambit and a SharpMaker, but I thought I couldn't use the sharpener because it only has 30 & 40 degrees *inclusive* or 15 and 20 degrees on a side. What is the second bevel on the karambit?

You'd need to reprofile to get the edge right. It may have been poor grinding at the factory too. I'd definitely return it. My 2008 (which I'm carrying today) was ground perfectly.

Doubt that. Return it to SMKW for another one.... Knife Center sent me a used to hell Mini A-100 a few years ago as new. It was probably returned and never checked when they got it back.

I talked to Ernest today, he explained that the grind on the Karambits tends to be a bit tricky. He said when they grind them its all on one pass so there will sometimes be 2 different angles, 1 on the majority of the blade and 1 in the belly. I trust him and was shocked an appalled when I found out thats who I was speaking to. Thats some damn fine customer service!

I'm not sure "appalled" is the right word to use. Cool you got to speak with the man himself.

I'm sure EKI would take care of you if you send it to them. Ideally though, the place you got it from should take care of you.

Just noticed something fun, my warranty card is missing, so this was indeed a used knife I was sent by Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Sooooo now I'm good and pissed but Ill send it back and just get refunded. On a less crappy note, what Emerson would you guys recommend? Im going to order straight through the company this time, not chancing this crap again. I really like this little kbit and the persian looks awesome! Any recommendations?

How cool is it that the owner of the company took time to speak with you about a problem.
This is the second thread about SMKW selling a less than brand new Emerson at full price. Glad I don't shop there.

Everyone seems to love the CQC-7.
Personally I am torn between the GJ and the Horseman.

I am sure whichever one you get won't be your last so no worries!

I really like so many of the designs. I would suggest going with the one that has a curb appeal right off the bat. It is hard to stear you away from the Karambit as well. I was surprised how much I used it for edc chores. I have the super Karambit. I carry the CQC10 none stop. That being said, I will pick up a black Karambit for my next edc. For what I do on a daily basis (rope, tape, boxes) , it excels. Plus, it's the one you spoke to Ernie about-wow.

Hi, this is my first post but have been lurking around for a while now. I was looking at my EKI Combat Karambit and your pictures posted. I just noticed that your logo is on the left side. I'm looking at mine and the logo is on the right side and the left is flat. Did you get a left hand model?

Nope, I just bought what SMKW had in stock. I already sent it back so I cant look and I see what your talking about, but I think that It may just be mirroring of the image from the way I took the picture on my laptop. I really want to say that if you laid the knife down tip pointing to your left and the ring pointing to your right the logo would be staring you dead in the face. I cant be sure about that though since its already on its way back but Im pretty freaking positive. When my new one comes in on Monday I can tell you which side its on?
