Hello all, I'm in the market again looking for a high - end Combat / Utility Fixed Blade.

Budget is $400 tops.

I was originally set on the Chris Reeve Green Beret, but watched and read some disheartening reviews on it's overall performance, and ability to stand up to abuse.

I'm looking for a knife that weighs lighter and has a thiner spine than the ESEE-5. Basically not so much of a tank. Although that's not a bad thing of course. Just looking for something lighter, but can also take as much abuse.

The knife ;

  • Must be 4 ~ 9" In Length.
  • Must weigh 10 ~ 15 Ounces.
  • Must have a black blade finish. I.E. Black Powder Coating / Benchmade's BK1
  • Have media / reviews backing it's awesomeness.

Hope I can find something that'll fail to disappoint and instead amazes me.

ESEE-6? You already can attest to Rowens quality and at its price you would have some cash left over for other things. Or another option might be a bark river sts series but they are pretty tank like from what I've seen

Combat/Utility is an interesting category.

I would recommend checking out the following:

Tom Halloran - custom maker who specialises in combat/utility fixed blades
Swamp Rat - Excellent value for money and lifetime guarantee
Busse - A bit more expensive but you can get something pretty good for under $400 (eg, Hell Razor, ASH1 or BATAC). Ditto on the guarantee. Plus they are all coated. The Exchange right here is the best place to find Busse and Swamp Rat. Also check their respective company stores.
Fehrman - top notch materials and reputation in the industry. Use CPM-3V, one of the toughest steels around

Becker BK7 or BK9 would meet your description and your budget will barely be dented. Here's a gratuitous pic of my BK9...
