Wanted to hike this area before it gets too hot, it's a mean slog up the mountain with hardly any shade.

This is what most of the trail looks like, steep and rocky. GPS app tells me I gained over 1000 feet getting to the top.

It looks boring to some, but I feel most at home in the scrub. The scent of sage hangs heavy in the hot air.

Yucca were in bloom all over

Found lots of new rock outcroppings

This looked like a perfect kitchen table, but I wasn't quite ready to eat yet

Trail turns into a scramble near the top

Old part of fence or gate going right into the rock wall

At the top there is lots to explore

Part of an old cow camp

Up close, the posts were all biurned out

Finally some shade

I'm really liking this new Jeff White knife. It's thin, light and comfortable to use.

nice! definitely very different than the environment i hike in...i'm already sweating just looking at the pics!

Good photos

the chaparral
What is that

But from the pictures it could be the Galilean Hills where I live in Israel

It definitely gets hot! Starting in the next couple weeks, I will have to get an early start to enjoy the trails around here. It gets super hot, and most of the local trails have very little to no shade.

neeman, chaparral is the type of scrubby plant areas associated with the dry climate of Southern California. Not quite a desert environment, but close. I was born and raised here, so it is the type of landscape that I feel at home in :)

Sasha, this is the China Flats area in the Simi hills. I work very close to this area, and had passed the trailhead many times.

Thanks Tknife.
I'm sometimes in that area so might just hit the trail with my dad dog Bella.

I thought that was the Rocky Peak fire road for a minutes, until I saw the gate/fence thing. China Flats is over toward the Wood Ranch side of Simi? Living off of Kuehner, you'd think I would know better.

Yep, you can get up there through wood Ranch as well. I started on the other side in the Oak Park area. Rocky peak is a tough one too, just keeps going up!

Only for a couple miles, with a nice, flat stretch in the middle. Still, great view of the Valley and Simi. A little crowded, though.
