So i have had my caly 3 for about two weeks and already chipped the blade. Seriously, WTF. Why does this happen to my good knives and never to the cheap ones? Looks like its going to Golden with my dragonfly that is also chipped. All i cut is boxes at work. Don't know how or where they got chipped, but i am no abuser(spelling?). Update: i now have another chipped dragonfly from cutting rubber hose. I have a mini mojito that has performed all the same cutting tasks as i have put these spydies through and no chips on it, why does this keep happening to these spydercos. I carried the mojito for almost two years cutting all sorts of things i wouldn't even consider cutting with a sydie and i has not a single blemish. I guess i can't really use a spyderco for my purposes which really sucks because this is my favorite brand of knife.

That was my guess. You probably hit a staple. That"s how I chipped my Chinese folder.

Don't know. Didn't realize till i got home. If i was better with the stone i would fix it myself, but i'm not willing to learn on my favorite knife.

The same happened with my Persian couple times. Some bad people staple boxes and put brown tape on the top of them. fixed it with coarse stones on my sharpmaker.

Yes, cardboard is actually a lot rougher on edges than some think. Staples are one thing, but depending on the carton you were cutting there can be a lot of impurities in the cardboard including sand, wood, and metal.

Learning to sharpen your own stuff might be more fun than you think. I never thought I would enjoy it or get to be very good at it, but I found quickly that it is very relaxing and enjoyable...but I will warn you, you may get addicted to constantly touching up your edges to maintain a ridiculously high standard of sharpness once you learn.

Get some ZDP-189. That stuff can get punched in the teeth and it won't flinch. I accidentally smacked the edge of my ZDP D4 against a metal dumpster a couple weeks ago. There was a good sized cut in the paint and the metal. I was horrified to think about what I was going to see when I looked at the edge for damage, but when I looked, there wasn't a shiny spot on the edge to speak of.

I would pick up a cheap, interchangeable blade box cutter for cardboard. That stuff can really do a number on blades.

Sorry, I guess i did not clarify. This is the cf caly 3 with ZDP-189. I was thinking about how this may have happened and remembered that i had to open some manifold boxes yesterday. Maybe i got some cast iron on accident, but i never noticed.
