Question: Why?

How about (for starters):
The Young Ones
Bottom
Friday Night Live (UK version with Ben Elton)
Saturday Night Live (ditto)

OK, added them.

I keep seeing bits of old comedies on the telly and I was just wondering how many there have been?

I've missed out a few particularly naff ones like "Mind Your Langage".

Andy.

How flexible do you want to be with the term comedy?

Howsabout all those terrible (IMHO) 1970's ones:
On the Buses
Love Thy Neighbour
Terry & June
Robins Nest

Yep, thought of them.

Nobody reminded me about Red Dwarf! Or Steptoe and Son! Or the Brittas Empire!

Andy.

My favorite is "Do Shut Up", a fictional British comedy on the Simpsons.

As Homer explains, "It's about a hard drinking, yet loving family of soccer hooligans, if they're not having a go with a bird, they're having a row with a wanker".

I like Monty Python, The Goodies (just barely remember that one), Benny Hill (delightful tales of ribaldry), and from what I've seen of Blackadder, I like it a lot.

'Sledge Hammer' seasons 1 and 2 ;)
......"Trust me, I know what I'm doing!"

Adding to the British list - "Minder" - Arthur Daly was a brilliant
Always got a laugh from "Get Smart", "Hogans Heroes" and "F Troop"

Ernie Kovacs ?
I found a 12 pack tape set of almost all of his shows. The Naroibi Trio broke me up. One favorite was the silent program. Sadly watching it was so overwhelming I sold them later. Some of the units were still sealed.

Uncle Alan ;) ;)

At the risk of being flamed for being politically incorrect, or even racist (which I am not) I love "Amos 'n Andy."

The show was prematurely cancelled in the early fifties due to protests from the NAACP but in a review of the series by PBS a few years ago there were many African-Americans who also thought the show was not only funny but a breakthrough for black Americans on a TV series.

The series can still be seen on DVDs and VHS tapes hawked on Ebay.
