This Victorian era Indian kukri has a very comfortable metal grip. While not the normal shape, it certainly feels good in the hand.

The kukri itself is 21" o/and has a very well made form fitting scabbard with a unique closure sysytem.

John,

That an odd one. It looks like a ceremonial piece with a functional blade. Do you have any history on it?

Let me add: Very nice!

I don't think it was made for use, but the blade is more than just a canvas for the designs. It is beyond the "bazaar" kukri and was probably made for fancy or formal functions. I don't categorize it as a kothimora either. It's just an interesting piece that was from the estate of a Canadian family that had ancestors who were EICo functionaries.

JP - I'm interested in the the closure strap - could you explain?

Also, how does the handle terminate at the butt (on the top part)? Looks like it's got a bit of a hump...is it rounded, or ridged?

JP Is the fancy work on the handle silver koftari or something else, what do you think this piece would date to?

Intresting grip JP! Whats it look like from the top profile? Any chance of another veiw?
thanks for sharing!

Probably 1880-1910. Excellent and detailed koftgari plus acid etched designs. The grip is 5 3/8"

The closure system has a small snap at the end of the reinforced strap that's held in place by the buckle. I have replaced the original material that had come apart.
