Coming back, with old knives

I've been away from here for almost 3 years now.

I did notice MagnaCut and some other new stuff coming around.
For some reason I never felt that MagnaCut is "calling me" like some steels and knives did... so I never got one.

Is it worth it?

I graduated in meanwhile and am now going to get masters degree, I'm also working full time job, going to gym and have a GF... so I had 0 time for knives.

In meanwhile, I was gifted Recon1 tanto and it's been my exclusive EDC for almost 2 years now, and 1095 Izula is a back-up knife I carry most of the time.
And I also have Italian made AK47 in 3V and I spent fair share of my time slamming that thing into wood, meat and bones like I hate it - it took all abuse without any issues.

I recently got S35VN Recon1 spear point (I lost the tanto and found it few days after I bought this spear point), and I have CTS-XHP Recon1 spear point on it's way. I plan to do lots of testing once I get the knife, and post the results here. I really wonder what version is better. I got it just because... I wonder what XHP steel is like.

Also, is the MagnaCut worh it over 3V and other stuff that has been around all this time?

Edit: Happy Easter everyone! I almost forgot...

3V and magnacut are for different types of knives....
3V is great for survival knives, and magnacut is great for hard, thin edges hunters/slicers/edc

*time must go by fast I could of sworn I was commenting or arguing on Your posts more recently than 3 years ago.....haha!

Check its characteristics: corrosion resistance, edge retention, strength, etc. and see if those are of interest to you.
I took a look... I'm happy with my 3V fixed blade and my S35VN folder. All this time and I never wished I had something else.
And 1095 ESEE is just here for jobs I don't wanna do with my Recon1.. even if I break it - ESEE will replace it...

Yeah, life does go on. Getting old XHP Recon1 model and having new S35VN version made me want to test and compare both.
Then I remembered this place - I know plenty of people here would like to know the results.

So I hopped back on here... and also to ask about new stuff.

I faded outta here about the early 2000's when S30V was what Magnacut seems to be now in the knife world. It sure was strange to come back and see D2 is like...a ghetto steel, S30V and VG-10 ain't nuthin' to brag about, and it'd be easier to pass a bar exam than name all the alphabet soup China steels.

So far I've had a few Magnacut knives. My Benchmade Dacians have left me underwhelmed, but my David Mary Custom in Magnacut seems to be hitting all the right spots and may become a favorite. The first Dacian had a blade that seemed soft as baby poop. The one the factory sent to replace it seems.....better, though I'm still feeling it out. Not near as impressive as the DMC. Maybe less of a praise or damnation for Magnacut, and more of a reminder that all steels can suck if not appropriately heat treated?

My next knife however will be 3V. K390 and Cruwear have impressed me too. I'm not a connoisseur of steel, but I have a tough time telling a lick of difference between S30V,S35V,S45V, etc.

On one hand I look at current knife prices of my favorite manufacturers and choke, on the other hand it seems like this may be a golden age of knife collecting.

Magnacut is great because it has the performance of a high alloy tool steel like 4V while being extremely corrosion resistant. It's the first and only steel to do this, although it looks like Larrin has created another stainless steel with the performance of K390 that will soon be released under the name Magnamax. It is excellent for smaller fixed blades and any kind of folder. Try it, you'll probably like it.

Academic Honesty+Scientific Credibility=Magnacut.

Accepting that formula is up to you.

What is your current budget?
What are your current knife uses?
Collector, User or Hybrid?

I just can't see myself going over 200€ on anything except maybe a custom.

EDC - opening stuff, zip ties, some plastic bands/wraps, rarely cardboard, food and sometimes picking up stuff from garden.

Bigger fixed blades - taking down some branches, cutting up roots around the pipes, cutting up meat, separating joints and so on.

I use my knives, but some see barely use while some that are my favorites see use all the time...
