Pretty big news in the Tormek knife sharpening universe. They've announced the imminent release of a new device for setting knife sharpening angles, which should be quicker and much more precise than their previous device, which was better suited to setting angles for planar blades and chisels.

The new rig is called the KS-123 Knife Angle Setter and Tormek will be doing a live demonstration on Youtube Wed. at 9:30 am ET. Info. available on their website.

Makes sense from a geometry standpoint. Uses two arms plus the blade slot equidistant from one another to establish the contact point and the angle because of how the angle is measured with 0° being perpendicular to the radius at the contact point. The quick adjustment is really the hardest part to sort out and it looks like they managed it, though it'll probably still be a good deal slower than the video footage since they were able to make jump-cuts.

Yeah, one thing that can take some time is using the micro-adjuster to raise/lower the guide bar. But since knives are generally similar in size, it shouldn't be that big a deal. I use the calculator method to set angles now, and the bar height really only varies by about 2 cm from the narrowest to the widest blade size, assuming the edge angle is constant. I'll be very curious to see how quick it is in pracitce.

Of course, the fastest method is to get good with freehanding on a wheel, but it has a steep learning curve. Working a blade at a 45° skew can really help with minimizing your contact point variation.

This fills a big gap in the Tormek offering.👍 I ordered one...

I agree the existing angle guide is not very precise.

This angle setter should also be useful to quickly set a precise angle for stropping, when using a second universal support in the horizontal position. Especially since the stropping wheel diameter is smaller than the grinding wheels.

So has anyone else got theirs yet? Any reviews? Mine is setting in the box waiting for me to re-dig the giant Tormek back out from the garage. The process is on hold because I cannot for the life of me find the blade holder and I'm refusing to buy another once. Since I would just find it a week later.
