I'd have to be honest and say I wouldn't use it for utility. The curve of the blade makes it a wicked folding fighter, but other than using it to open boxes etc. I really would go with a straight edge such as my CQC7 !

Anyone else got any views on this ?

Opinions vary as to utility usage. I will say that Ernie, Mary, Shaun (our operations manager) and myself all carry ommanders daily. I will admit to rotating a CQC-7 in there.

I think the it is a great utility knife but you need to get used to the tricks of sharpening/keeping sharp the Commander.

Take care,
Derek

Didn't buy mine for utility, but it does cut carpet pretty well and is great at shredding letters and envelopes! The tip isn't good for fine work. The only thing I ever cut with the tip of mine was my finger!

I have found the Commander to be (for my needs) the ideal compromise between a utility blade and a defensive blade (it maybe the most truely "tactical" out there). For example I used mine extensively during a three day edged weapons conference (where its performance was outstanding as a rapidly deployed weapon), and followed it up with two days of teaching a rifle class where I used my Commander to cut large quantities of thick tape, webbing, ammo boxes, and cardboard targets, as well as trimming wooden target stands. It is now residing in my pocket for all my day to day cutting needs.

I've found it to be a tough reliable knife for general utility. It really holds up well and you can cut without worrying about much damage to the blade. I don't do much fine detail work so the Commander works fine for me.

There we have perhaps the most important point. Can anyone share with us the right way of sharpening the Commander. If they can, I would certainly carry (and use) mine more.

use a spyderco model 204 sharpener at 30 degrees fo the unsharpened side with the medium grit stone. for the sharpened side, put the fine grit stone in at the 30 degrees angle but hold the knife so the edge will be touching and go lightly on it.

at all times use the apex of the stone, not the flats.
