Commander back to EKI

Well, my 2004 Commander is going to have to go visit EKI. I have only had it for approximately 4 months, and cut plenty of things with it. I usually use the thumb stud to open it, but I have "waved" it on occasion. Mostly it resides in my right front pocket.

The liner lock is now all the way to the right and is almost touching the right liner. It will still past a spine-wack but I just don't think it's right. When new it was just to the right of center, but through normal use has migrated more and more to the right.

So I will be calling EKI later today and shipping it off to them. Hopefully the turnaround time is not long. I love the knife, fits my hand perfect, opens quick, love the blade and its easy to sharpen. I just wish it had a better lock.

Here is a pic.

I have seen some conversions to framelock by someone obviously more talented then me, anyone know who it was?

That looks wrong to me too. I had a 99 commander that I bought used and when I got it it had the same problem. I sent it back EKI as well and I had it back in a week maybe a week and a half. I don't know much about knife building but it seems like a problem that may be common with liner locks. It's still my personal favorite locking method though. good luck with that

I had this problem too and solved it by putting some teflon tape in the G-10 dimple for the stop pin on the side of the liner titan piece.

This causes the gap between the liner and its own side to increase, changing the geometry of the lockup. My liner went back to the centre and no problems since then for about a year, it has stayed tight and secure in the centre under constant use and spine whacking without moving since then.

In my opinion, I would send it back rather than trying to fix it yourself. I sent mine back and it was in my hands and fixed in just under two weeks. My blade (karambit) had play in it and it was hitting the liner slightly upon closing. I think this could have been solved by just tightening the screw a little, but I wanted to send it back to be sure it was fixed properly (and I didn't want to void the warranty)

i agree, send it back to EKI, they will make it perfect and it usually doesnt take but 1-2 weeks (8 days for me one time) no reason to try and fix it yourself imho.

Better to send it back if you live in US. From where I am, it takes 23 hours to fly to US, so I do things myself. So far has been OK.

I also believe the comm is a knife built so that ppl can adjust it themselves.

my karambit liner lock falls dead center every time, but one time I wave opened it so f&%$in' hard that the liner lock went all the way over to the other side, but not as far as yours... I hope mine doesn't end up like that, as least we have a good warranty:thumbup:

I just bought a Commander, and it is currently back at EKI with the same exact problem. Emersons liners are traditionally tight and have to be broken in vigorously, but this was a problem. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that has this same problem with the Commander. Other than this...by far the greatest knife I own. However, I agree with the others on this thread...better to send it back to EKI and let them worry about it instead of trying to fix it the do-it-yourself way...you could fu#$% up your knife and void the warranty.

PS: I have seen literature from EKI regarding this, and they say that a stiff tight liner lock is normal. I had a very stiff lock on my seven, but it has smoothed out nicely...goes to the same spot each time whether I baby the knife, or whack the S@#$!@ out of it when I open it. Had the seven for about four years now...it took about a year to break in.

There are a few people that do after market custom work on knives to convert them to framelocks. Out of respect for this forum I don't feel it is appropriate to list who/where but if you do a search for custom, or "pimping" jobs you can find some good work.

I recently saw a picture of a commander with a titanium framelock that was really cool.

It's back!

EKI fixed the liner lock, and it is looking good now. Plus they replaced the pivot screw that was scratched up, and they sharpened the blade. They did a great job, and it was quick.

I really love the Commander, I just wish I could get a HD Commander. Just replace the liner lock and scale with a titanium frame lock scale.

Yup, my Commander is back now, and the liner is really smooth now. Same for my CQC8. I am currently breaking in my new Super CQC7 (which also has a very stiff liner).
