Not including the Sebenza as a production knife, I'm impressed with the Commander. In your opinion, how does it compare with Benchmades - fit and finish, quality of G10, materials, heat treat, steel, etc...

Do you like the wave feature - in certain situations, I think it could be viewed as too aggressive.

After taking apart and rebuilding two Commanders, I have to give the overall, initial quality rating to Benchmade. However..... once reworked I prefer the Commander as a tactical knife over anything in the Benchmade lineup!! It's large, rock solid, and has an aggresive looking/cutting blade.
As far as the Wave feature being to extreme.....It all depends on how you draw it from your pocket

Dr. Lathe-
Can you describe what was done to rework/improve the Commander? I take it that this involved more than just cosmetic changes.

Hello,

I guess I just do not have the same need for a large, wide recurved edge that others do. To me, the Commander is a bit bulky to open (without using the wave) and I have read about and experienced more QC problems than should be found on a knife AOA $150. I'm much happier with the SpecWar.

I did a quick comparison of the Commander side by side with the Benchmade 710. Though I didn't actually measure, the 710 appeared to use thicker liners and thinner G-10 than the Commander.

Well, I would imagine the Commander would not be something one could easily use for thrusting techniques. If it was intended as a slashing weapon, I think the claw/talon knives outperform it in that task.

Thank you.

Overall fit and finish on the Commanders I've seen is inconsistent. Small things like the G-10 recess has a little blip in it and not a perfect arc, the screws protrude beyond the liners and the black wears off of them quickly, and the finish around the lanyard hole is rough.

That said, I really like the robustness of the Commander and would love to see the Wave licensed and available on other production knives. The disk is fine, but I prefer dual studs myself...
