What are your opinions on the commander?
I found one for 160.00 new is this a good price, is the knife worth that?

Thanks

I have a Commander and it is a good knife, there are some minor quality control problems but nothing to be too concerned about(ie. the pivot screw loosens a little after regular use and the blade shows some blade play because of it. Just tighten up the screw and it is good as new again) If you check with some of the dealers that advertise on this Forum or check the For Sale by Dealers forum you can usually find them for $150 and I believe there was one as low as $135 in the For sale- Dealers forum yesterday.

I have carried mine for over a year and love it. I normally only carry autos but this is faster than any auto I have ever carried. Like what was said above it does require more than usual pivot and screw tightning but other than that it is way cool.

I've been keeping an eye out on these myself. How's resharpening the uniquely-beveled blade on that thing? How's the overall construction? Is the stop pin larger than the too-small stop pin on the Ravens? Thanks.

I finally bought a Commander last month from MJ&S, when Mark had them on sale. I liked this knife so much, I just bought a Specwar from 1stop and will be on the lookout for other good deals on Emerson knives.
I have read about quality control issues with Emerson, but both the knives I recieved have no problems.

If you like one-sided chisel grinds and don't agree that Emerson does his on the wrong side of the blade for right handed users, then there is much to recommend about Emerson's folders.

I sold my SpecWar for a couple reasons (including those above plus it has an inefficient blade-to-handle length ratio), but I thought materials and fit/finish were fine for the price, but no better really than Benchmade's better knives.

The initial liner lockup is very tight...I must've cycled the knife 500 times or more and it sort of got somewhat broken in, but a tight lockup can be considered a benefit by some. Doesn't bother me that much, but then again, I tried to cycle it to break it in.

I'd buy the CQC8 Banana if it comes out in production clothes if it were just ground on the other side of the blade. That's one great looking fighter and looks like it wouldn't piss me off when used daily in a utilitarian way either. Same for Mach 1.

Usually I find the best prices for Emersons at www.discountknives.com and www.knifeoutlet.com. Sometimes www.botachtactical.com has them on sale, in addition to a lot of other business gear. In regards to the loose pivot screw, from what I hear that is basically by design (???). I used a little of the red loctite on it, and it has moved a bit since. Be careful when using the loctite (red only!) that you don't get any on the liners or bushings, or it will really mess up the action. Also, putting it in the female side of the pin ONLY keeps the process a lot cleaner.

First, I have to disagree with Scott,
RED Locktite is the PERMANENT stuff! The only way to get it to loosen up is by heating the bonded material to 450+ degrees farenheit. Obviously you can't do this without burning the scales right off of it and ruining the spring quality of the locking mech, not to mention destroying the temper on the blade, so stick with BLUE Loctite, it holds the screw position just fine and will break loose with a little added effort if/when the knife needs to be adjusted or disassembled.

That said, I love the design and the Commander IS incredibly fast but I now have to send mine back as the threads stripped on the pocket clip during normal use and I now have a clipless Commander. (Pretty useless)
I still say though, GREAT knife and I'm thinking about buying another one so I won't be without it while the original is in for repairs.

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

I hate to admit this in public, but after playing with Don Rearic a pair of commanders and commander trainers are on my "must have list." I really dislike the chisel ground, and I don't like the quality, but after working out with Don and finding how quick you can deploy and cut with those suckers, I'm a reluctant convert.

Okay, I have egg on my face. I guess I should have looked at my tube of Loctite before I posted. But when you only have three brain cells, two are used for breathing, leaving only one for everything else, which is why I am so easily confused.
