Commander gone bad...

alright...so it didn't really go bad...but it has some vertical blade play all of a sudden...

i got this 2000 commander used from a guy on the forums and the black coating was in bad shape, so i took it off with some very fine sandpaper and then some metal polish to take away the scratches...

so it has had a handmade satin finish for three weeks, and suddenly a little vertical bladeplay...other than that, the knife is in great condition, the edge is very sharp and there are no imperfections in the edge...

my question is if i should send it to Emerson Knives...is this something they should be concerned about, or is it something that happens with light use? im concerned my taking off the finish might void the warrenty even though i know it didn't cause the blade play...i never once touched either the liner lock or where it hits the blade with sandpaper...

if sending it to Emerson is out of the question...does anyone want to take it off my hands? i have pictures if anyone wants...this knife is fully fuctional, im just a perfectionist about my knives, and i would rather pay and get a perfect one...it would be perfect for a user...

40 oz:

I just sent a SOCFK to EKI for the same problem. I was unable to determine the exact problem which caused the movement.I do not suspect that your personal 'satinizing job' will affect the overall warranty of the knife. You should contact Derek or another staff memeber at EKI and verify what procedures you might take to rectify the problem.

Just in case you were not aware, there was a group of 2000 Commanders that were assembled with bad [read: poor HT] stop pins and that posed an eventual malfunction in blade/lock-up integrity. Make sure your stop pin hasn't cracked allowing for some vertical "blade play".

Hope this helps.

Edited: Because I can't spell.

thanks for the reply...its not the stop pin, when you push down on the blade, the liner lock moves down because its not tight enough against the blade...i just figured this out...what do you think?

Roger that.

I've had this happen to me also. As a result of the fortunate/unfortunate ability to field strip the knife, you may have taken the knife off its tolerences just slightly. When I 'satinized' my PSARK, I also had some initial 'play' in the blade. The blade did tend to slipped off the liner somewhat (which caused me some obvious concerns). The knife now serves me well without problem.

Disassemble the knife again and wipe down the liner and blade lock area with some alcohol or residue remover. When you reassemble it, try to do so the way you originally field stripped it for your 'satin project'. Barring this, EKI stands behind it' knives. They will surely make the knife "like new".

Ray, thanks so much for your help, it sounds like solid advice...ill try this tomarrow and tell you how it goes...thanks again!

Out of the "few Commanders I've had, I had this issue with one that I took in trade. It was a used knife and the lock slipped some. Obviously I wouldn't carry it with an F'ed up lock, so I set it into EKI for a litle rehab.

Two weeks later I recieved the Commander back and damned if it wasn't good as new (with the exception of the minor scratches in the Black-T of course). It's now in EDC rotation.

Send it in.

Ray, last night i took apart the commander, rubbed the liner lock and the blade down, put it back together and now it works tight as the day i got it! absolutely no blade play! thanks so much for your expert advice.

I have another question though:

When i took the finish off the blade, i used a very fine sandpaper and then Wendol metal polish to try and remove the last of the scratches....it looks pretty good, but there are still very fine scratches in the blade, is there anything short of using an electric buffer or sander to get the scratches out?
