I recently got my first Emerson (2000 Commander) and was wondering if it would be a good all purpose EDC. I've been doing alot of reading up on the chisel grind and how it may not cut as effectively as a conventional V grind for utility tasks. I carry a plainedge blade and a serrated blade for EDC, mainly depending on the plainedge for SD if needed. However, if possible I wouldn't like to carry more than I need if the Commander can be used for utility purposes as well as its' self defense role.

I would like some opinions from those of you that carry a Commander for EDC and also use it for utility, not just for SD. Would this grind just take some getting used to? Would it just be better to regrind the blade to a V grind?

Thank you for any comments/feedback. :D

I would V grind it. Nothing wrong with the chisel but V works better for me. My '02 has been my EDC for the past month and a half now.

This is my favourite knife from my whole collection :)

Chisel grind and my boxes and mail are just as open, my finger nails just as trimmed, and my apples just as nicely cut as if I had used another knife.

Sometimes you have to reverse the grip to work the proper side of the blade but its no big deal.

KBR, I don't own a standard size Commander (yet). I do own a Mini Commander and a Super Commander. Both make great EDC knives. The chisel ground edge hasn't caused me any problems, and it slices like crazy. I have considered putting a 'normal' edge on my Mini Commander, however.

Concerning my opinion about the Super Commander being a great EDC, there is one thing you need to take into account. My absolute favorite EDC is my Strider AR. Compared to an AR, a Super Commander is a breeze to carry...

KBR....I also carry (for the most part) a 2000 Commander SFS as my EDC. I've never had any problem adapting to the unique Emerson grind. In certain cutting situations, take cardboard for example, the blade might want to plane off to one side, but to me it's no biggie, and easy to get a feel for.

Cutting rope, strapping, etc., there's no problem whatsoever.

Flesh? Well...that's what it was kinda designed to get through in a hurry anyway. Hopefully not your own....

I think that I will stick to the Commander as my primary EDC, taking the place of my Spyderco Military at times. Yesterday, I ran the Commander on my 204 at the 30 degree evenly on both sides and came out with outstanding results. I suppose that it will take some time to rebevel the edge to a somewhat V grind, but I think that I would prefer it better that way. That edge was scary sharp!! :D

BTW, I just received my second Emerson, the LaGriffe, and I am just as impressed with this little knife as I was with the Commander. I'm already thinking of getting a Black T Commander, a CQC7, and......

(And the Emerson addiction begins.....:D ;))
