I have a right handed Emerson Commander, dated 2000. The liner lock is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy to the right (another 2 mm or so and the liner would hit the opposite handle). Should this go back to EKI for service? Does anyone have any experience with this?

technically yes it should, however i have seen knives that went all the way to one side and they still locked up fine, though i suppose they coulda failed at any time, open the thing and LIGHTLY tap the tip against a carpet/etc and see if it slips, if it doesnt it might would be ok, to be safe send to EKI, they will fix it and get it back to ya quickly (2-3 weeks ) probably only charge ya shipping.

SIFU1A,
I tried the light tap as you suggested and the liner slipped twice. Off to EKI it goes. Thanks for your reply.

It the liner isn't worn out, I would try to self-service it by disassembling the knife and bending the liner to the left. But don't bend it so much that you don't get positive lockup.

I would also check to see if the liner isn't curved, that is, bent into a radius. If it is curved, bending it straight will make it go back to locking on the left.

With my 2004 comm, I bent the liner too much to the right, made it curved accidentally, and it was always locking up to much on the right and galling too much. After straightening it, it was OK.

Then I tried bending it the other way(the left) too much, and it underengaged, always slipping off the tang to the left. Not enough rightwards-springforce in the liner.

Now I have the liner tuned to just a bit too much overengagement. The liner locks up near the centre of the tang ramp, with a left bias, and has a lot of right-spring to keep it from slipping left off the tang ramp.

Send it back with $15 to cover UPS and the good folks at EKI will make it right.
