COMMANDER on ebay

Very strange. I'm no expert on them either but ... the eBay link shows three small flatheads holding the handle together, running the length of the handle.

Both my Commander and the picture on the Emerson website have two small Phillipshead screws flanking the lanyard hole instead.

didnt the waved commanders come later than 98?

the slot screws are suspicious to me as well.

all the screws on that knife are flat heads ? iv never had any flat head screws on my EKIs, they are all phillips bar the pivot.
it seems a little suss to me but you never know the owner might just have changed them, i dont see why they would though ???

Buy your Commanders from an authorized dealer.

I agree, I think the price is too good to be true, unless the seller doesn't know what he's got. I've never seen the flathead screws on the handle of the knife, just the pivot. This knife should range around $150~$170 brand new in box. Anything below this is suspicious and above this is not worth it, especially when there's so many commanders out there within this price range. I love my commander, so good luck getting yours, J.

98 Commanders are more than $150-170. They are closer to $300 for a like new/minty piece. Hence the attraction to the ebay auction.

best you drop EKI a line at info@emersonknives.com to check. they can confirm from the pics....

i am fairly certain some of the older commanders (and yes '98s were waved) had the slotted vs phillips screws, soon afterwards they went to all philips except the frame lock ones. the screw patterm looks legit to me too some of the older ones had the screws like that one, kinda like the screws on the '8. perhaps i'm blind but i didnt see what yr it was posted innthe add, it would be an older pre'00 one though if legit.

& i think its legit FWIW.

I have owned a Commander with flat head screws but I thought it might have been a 99 or 2k model. The other thing is about this knife is that the liners do not look thick or overly thick. That was the big selling point of the 98's and super commanders wasn't it? Thick liners and a 4" blade? Could be wrong on that one though. Most definetly looks like a real commander to me just not a 98 commander from the ones I have seen and handled. Just my 2 cents. keepem sharp

he's took an awful lot pics from every angle. i dont believe he would have done that if he was trying to sell a fake. just my 2c worths.,,VWB.

Looks to me like the Emerson logo is incomplete

Underneath the left triangle graphic there should be a model name/date stamp/"made in USA" marking -
The Emerson I have from a 2007 run also uses Philipshead screws to secure the scales and liners.

My 98 Emersons and even a 99 have flat head screws. The Wave is probably fine since Ernie developed it then or right around that time anyway. I'm a bit confused about the position of the serial number which is normally right under the thumb disc and the positioning of the entire logo seems a bit too far right but it may be that this was one of the differences of earlier models. It looks like a real Emerson but all my 98 ones have thicker liners than the one shown. Its hard to be absolutely sure looking at a picture but those look as thin as all the other years to me.

I have not handled a 98 Commander though so maybe those didn't have the thicker liners like the other 98 models did. Both my 98 Specwars have liners in excess of .060 thickness though.

Yep. Its a real 98 Commander. I just checked the logo comparison of mine and they are the same. Its going to be interesting. In that second pic by the patch the liners look right too so I think its the thicker lined model.

All the screws on that knife should be flat head I think but you can find them both ways, even the one in the top of the thumb disc and for the clip are flat heads. Thats how mine are on my Specwars also. On my Specwar that has the black blade it has a thumb disc unlike any I have ever seen used by Emerson again. It isn't round but more squared with rounded edges and sticks out farther than the round ones. I like it a lot personally but on some Waved models its in the way and can actually inhibit the action for the Wave and make it less likely to work. I always figured that is more than likely why Ernie went with the smaller round one.

You can see another 98 here that is phillips.

Speaking of the Wave you might note that the Wave on that model is smaller than the new ones are.

I just called EKI and it is the real deal. Screws he has changed off an on from phillips to slotted. I know I have had a 99 or 2k commander with the slotted. Rest assured this is the real deal. keepem sharp

Auction spottting is not allowed. tgiannes took a chance, asking about a live auction where he might have been inviting a sniper to steal the item out from under him. There is a gray zone when it's not likely the poster is involved in the sale of the knife, so I let it stand.

When in doubt, ask before posting.

Beautiful knife.
Excellant collector.
Logo perfect.
Way low number.
Seller did a good job with pictures.
Sorry I missed it,

The fakers still use a silver thumbscrew. This is Emerson's usual black one.

Mute point now but my 1998 Commander as well as my 1999 Specwar have flat head screws throughout. And all early "factory" made Commanders had the wawe feature.
