Hey guys:

I'm brand new to emersons altogether. I'm in the process of doing searches on the forums regarding the commander, as I'm educating myself w/ regards to this particular design.

I first got interested in the commander during a discussion about folders w/ a JKD classmate. He told me that Paul Vunak preferred the Commander to all other folders. Of course, I've since been intrigued.

I'd like to hear all the things you just LOVE about this knife. Cutting power, speed of deployment, how it handles, etc. etc.

One thing I'd also like to know more about is the lock-up method: I'm absolutely PARANOID when it comes to liner locks. So I'd like to hear all of your input with regard to this aspect of the commander as well. Has it ever failed you? Is it just totally rock-solid?

Thanks guys, and I appreciate the input.

Commander is a great knife. The speed of deployment, is second to none, will beat any auto on the market.
The feel when it is in your hand is hard to describe. I ll leave it at it feels like its part or you, in forward or reverse grip.

As to the lock up, all 4 of mine are rock solid. I had a bad luck of the draw on one of my 2000's and got one out of the batch of the bad stop pins. When the stop pin cracked in half, the knife still locked up like a rock. I could have continued to use the knife without problems if I would have been in the field including folding and unfolding it.

Once you have one, it will take alot for you to give it up.

I really can't speak from experience with a Commander, but I just received my first one today, and it is sweet. All I can say is get one, I don't think you will be disappointed.:D

commanders are great, all the ones i have run across have fine lock engagement, and if it didnt, EKI would fix i'm sure.

commander is a good all around knife, imho, waved, looks good, fits my hand well, a great knife

but

i do like my SOCFK emerson better, its waved, tanto or SP, and its also $139.95 from www.tacticaledge.com , IF they have any

i have a green G10/black tanto SOCFK, and its my current edc, and i love it

I think the SOCFK is awesome, but it can't replace the Commander.

The handle ergonomicas (on both knives actually) are second to none. The shape of the blade however is the coolest part of the Commander. It is so awesome.

My advice is to go to a store and pick one up and feel it and get acquainted with it, and buy that knife which you feel and you like. Although each Commander is the same, each has its own personality.

Like Harry Potter's magic wand, the Commander CHOOSES its owner.

You will absolutely not be sorry.

I first showed Vu my Commander during an instructor's class here in Indiana in November of '99.He was quite intrigued to say the least. He really liked the 'wave' feature and how concealable it was compared to the fixed blades that he was used to handling.I have been using one for a while and doing demo's with it for instruction for law enforcement.I think it is a very handy weapon and may be deployed either open or not.I have used it yawara style to utmost discomfort to all who have felt it's wrath.:D Yes,it is very JKD-ish.I know lots of people from the circle that prefer it over any other knife.BWD

I own both a full-sized and a mini Commander, and have abused the hell out of both of them without any failure of the locking mechanism. I recommend the Commander to my JKD students as the best defensive folder on the market. My students and I have performed multiple hacking/slashing drills with live blades on targets made of wood/cloth/foam/rope and have not damaged the blades or caused the locks to fail. We have also tested the locks by striking the back of the extended blade with escrima sticks, yet we were unable to produce any lock failure. The only lock failure I have ever experienced with any Emerson product was with one of the first-run Commander trainers. Emerson immediately sent me a new one (with a functional lock) and I have noticed that the new trainers lock up rock-solid. I am not surprised that Sifu Vunak is a fan of the Commander.

Fedaykin:

that's great! I now have total faith in the locking system. Hitting a locking mechanism with an escrima stick full force without it failing is no joke!! I'm looking to invest in a large and mini commander in a couple of months.

I'm originally from Honolulu...Nuuanu boy! You with Burton's school?

4 Ranges:

I train with Burton and I also have my own school. If you make it back to Honolulu, please drop by. Glad to hear you are getting the Commander — you won't be disappointed!

Aloha,
Fedaykin
