most of the commanders I have seen pictures of are flat on one side...my new one is "???double ground ???"...is this normal?

By the way, I am totally satisfied with the purchase and again thankyou to all of the forum members who gave they're advice and opinions...

Croc,

The ones' with the the flat side are the custom ones from Ernie himself. They are chisel ground. Also they are a little bigger than the production version. The one you have and most of us are the production version. Smaller for ease of carry, double ground and chisel edged. Hope this helps.

AncientSUL is correct. The true Chisel ground "Commanders" are actually ES1-Ms. The Commander is a smaller production version of the ES1-M and they are "V" ground and the final sharpening is Chisel ground.

Another difference is that the ES1-M is about 20% larger overall then the Commander. In reality, this only accounts for about 1/4" of blade length.

You can find pictures on the Emerson Gallery. ES1-Ms are fairly rare as Emerson customs go. I think there are like seven ES1-Ms accounted for in our midst. Two are outside the US.

Here are a couple of shots that help illustrate the differences:

Right side

Enjoy your Commander.
