I got a question. Is the steel in the Commander 154-CM or ATS-34? This would be a real deciding factor on my buying it. Also, how exactly does "THE WAVE" work? My best guess is that it catches on the pocket and flip the blade out as you are drawing it. Any info guys?

154CM

The Wave:
The wave is a patented feature that allows the knife to be opened as it's drawn from the pocket. This is the fastest method of deploying a folder that I am aware of. It is located directly to the rear of the thumb disk and resembles a wave or hook. As the knife is drawn to the rear, the wave engages the edge of the pocket, opening the knife as it is drawn.

The Commander is 154-CM... You have the basic idea of how the wave works but words don't really do it justice!!! If you do a search here on the Commander there is a pretty good video type post of it in action... think the computer term is a J-peg or something

I just got one, based upon recommendations here, and I must say I am impressed. I got it to replace an autofolder I had been carrying. John's video was the clincher. I will say, it is darned fast to open with the wave. It takes a couple of tries to get it down, but it is neat. I haven't really used the knife yet to let you know how it holds up, but I have cycled it a ton of times for practice.

Thanks, John.

I don't see any real difference between the two, if I am not mistaken, 154-CM is the American version (Crucible?) of ATS-34 anyway. A great steel when properly heat treated in any event.

As for the Wave...well, even the video does not do it justice.

Just remember, the knife goes horizontal and is deliberately dragged out. Have fun and don't cut yourself.

And the same goes for a knife...

To the best of my knowledge, Don is correct. You'd have to be a metallurgist to tell the difference between the two.

The GIF used above is not mine. It is on loan from Tacticalblade.com.

Get a Commander, you won't look back.

Be very careful when drawing out your Commander while in the seated position. My buddy got a nasty cut on his finger because the "wave" caught in the edge of his pocket.

El Cid, the wave is supposed to catch the edge of you pocket.

Care should always be taken when drawing while seated. This goes with any knife or pistol.

A modicum of responsibility goes with carrying any "high speed" tool.

yours or not, that IS a sweet pic John. Yeah, i might get one. (i guess its not a question of if, but when)
