I've had couple of emersons in the past, and they were excellent knives, just not good utility knives. they were cqc7's. I was just wondering how good the commander would be for utility tasks, as i'm sure it is good for sd purposes.
any advice would be helpful. Also what other emersons are best for utility use?
thanks

I have carried a commander for 2+ years now I work new construction so it sees alot of hard use. it has never failed but i do carry my spyderco native at work now just because i would hate to loose my commander. over all the commander is a great utility knife, buy one you will be very happy you did.

when you receive you commander you will find the handle to be the best part of the knife. mine feels like it was made for my hand.

The handle on the Commander is amazing. The first time I deployed the blade, the knife dropped into a perfect fit to my hand. I've never had another knife that gripped so well.

As far as utility goes, that's chancey. It depends on what you do. It does slice well, but it's a big blade with a broad tip, not a fine point, so splinter-picking isn't its strong point.

I have an old combo-edge Raven that's an excellent utility knife -- great grip, lightweight, strong but pointy tip, plenty of plain edge but just enough serrations to work on plastic banding.

all EKI's will work as utility knives imho, just not as good at that as say a spyderco delica but they arent designed for utility.

a commander will work just fine for utility imho,

the best utility EKI is imho the '12, frame lock and almost s std "V" grind, '13 is #2.

i carry a '12 FWIW.
