I used my new set of Shapton Pro stones today (120, 320, 1000, 2000 and 5000) for the first time and I am very pleased. Completely different feel than my set of DMT diamond plates.

I read the care instructions that came with the stones but I wanted to know if you guys do anything different as far as cleaning, care and storage. I don't want to screw up and find out later I should have done something different. Also I got a Nugara stone at the same time, any particular care/use instructions you have for that too?
Thanks guys. David

Use a F DMT plate on the 5k if you have one.

Start lapping on your finest stone and work your way down.

Which Nagura did you get?

I don't know if a fine DMT would work too well, even the coarse sticks to waterstones pretty bad. Personally, I stick to my atoma 140 (previously DMT XXC) and smooth out my finer stones with a nagura. The nagura can also be used for cleaning of your finer shaptons as they will collect some metal on the surface.

I lap before every use and towel dry when I'm done, leaving them out to dry before placing them back in the box.

Jason, I used my Nagura slurry stone on the 2000 and 5000 stone to both clean and create a slurrry. As far as lapping I have a DMT XC plate. Do you think that would lap the stones?

It will stick a lot but will work, DMT on the other hand only recommends the XXC for lapping. I like my DMT stones but find my atoma 140 to be far superior.

I must say after having DMT plates for years I recently ordered a couple Atoma plates, and boy do I wish I had gotten those first. For stone lapping they are SO much better, and cutting speed doesn't fall off fast like the DMT plates did. I still prefer the DMT C and above for actual knife work, due to the higher concentration of diamond without the intermittent "dot" placement, but the Atomas are awesome for stone lapping.
