Im gonna say I got this CRKT apache II about 1999-2000 IIRC. It is ATS34 steel. I always thought that CRKT was using great steel and I did not know until recent posts that they have been using crapsteel for a lot of their knives for some time. I dug out this knife from my car and using 600 grit sandpaper got the rust off-which wasnt that bad. Resharpened it. This particular knife is great, aside from being a combo edge, not my preference, but it reminded me of the circumstance in which I got the knife.............
Disclaimer: A story that might bore you, just so you know.
Ok so back when I was doing hair I get this phone call at home 9pm from a friend that manages a gun store. He says he's in a bind, his daughter has school pictures the next day and could I highlight her hair despite the late hour. I say drive down to the salon and we will prolly get there the same time. So its 2 guys and a young lady at the salon, doing hair till almost 11pm. Im sure he's armed, and I got my trusty Glock 23 night sights, 155 gr hydrashocks concealed under my t shirt.
It was times like that I always kinda wished some stupid shit wouldve walked in to rob the place. What a surprise he would of had!! We are rockin to tunes, got the foils going in the hair. We get her set up for pics next day. When done, friend pays" mates rates" and then gives me the knife for a tip. Unexpected. Thats how I got the knife!
Anyway, back to CRKT knives. Once again, got good intel on their past workmanship from you guys and heard that a new owner is in charge. Hope that he makes some decisions that steer them in better directions with steel choices. I would imagine that the regular joe out there knows next to nothing about good steel for knives, and I think that some manufacturers capitalize on this and try to sell the cheapest knife they can make and sell it for the most money they can get.
