Anyone have any comments on any of Gutmann Cultlery's folders?
Junglee folders?
Walther?
They seem to be inexpensive, but how are they in quality?

Hey El....

All I can say is more Crap on the market....

What a shame a company with the name Walther has associated themselves with Junk...

Kinda like S&W did...

Some people will just sell their soles for a little cash..
wonder how many knives they actually sell ??

First time I've heard them mentioned here,,so they can't be selling alot...

Nice of them to knock off the Stiff Kiss Eh!!
LOL

The Junglee products I have used have performed well, especially the fixed blade models.

I've been carrying a Junglee Extreme Forces folder as daily carry blade for several months now. The only problems I have had is the black coating is wearing off, but then again this was a prototype model Junglee sent out. I have no complaints.

Junglee knives are okay. Decent steel well made. They are a decent buy. I would rather go with a more popular brand though. That is if you ever plan to sell or trade. I got a nice Junglee short sword in a trade a while back. I got it for nearly nothing, no one wanted anything Junglee. It was very good quality btw.

I have a Junglee fixed blade that I got very cheaply. AUS8A blade and Kraton-like handle. Works fine, but nothing to rave about.

One of my friends has the Junglee Tak Fukuta series of hunting knives and they came very nicely finished. He is also quite happy with the way they perform.

I once picked up a Junglee fighter with a name something like "Hattori". I just couldn't understand why they made the back half of the handle out of Kraton. It looked and felt odd.

Bottom Line: If you can get a user at a really good price, the Junglees will work. However, if a big discount isn't available, I'd look at other lines.

I have not been particularly impressed with the Junglee knives. They're of reasonable quality, but, only if you consider a United Cutlery folder of reasonable quality (which I do; I'm not a high-end hard-nose about these things). To me, most of the Junglee models seem overpriced for what you get. (For instance, United sells several variations on that shoulder-holster knife rig Junglee makes, but for half the price.)

The problem I DO have with Junglee is that most of their designs are out-and-out copies of other, more well-known blades.

Walther P99 Tactical knife by Junglee looks an awful lot like the AF, doesn't it? See:

This model from Junglee...

...bears an uncanny likeness to the SOG Pentagon...

And then, of course, there's the ol' AFCK by Benchmade, copied by this knife:

Although with folders there's always more wiggle-room for copies and interpretations; I might not be giving them a fair shake in this instance.

I don't know much about the Walther models but a number of the Gutmann and Junglee products are made in Japan and are first quality production pieces. The comparison with United is silly. Some amount of United stuff is indeed lower end - made in Taiwan (so is CRKT and even Cold Steel has marketed some Taiwan blades) - however United also markets knives made in various european countries (Italy, Germany, Spain) as well as Japan made knives. You may notice a resemblence between some Junglee fixed blades and some older Blackjack products made in Japan - more than likely from the same Japanese factory. The SOG/Junglee is a good example of this - most likely the same factory only the Junglee benefits from a little better steel (8A vs 440A).;)

How is it silly, then? You seem to be making my point for me; one can purchase knives of similar or only slightly lower quality for a lot less than Junglee asks for their blades. The two lines (excepting the lowest-end United pieces) seem comparable to me -- and Junglee is definitely overpriced for what you get.

How you can dismiss the blatant copy of the Pentagon -- which has been around longer than the Junglee line of folders has been noteworthy -- is a mystery to me. For that matter, how do you explain the recent Walther P99 tactical knife? If that's not a blatant, almost line-for-line copy of the AF, I'll eat my Bladeforums.com hat.

Buy what you like -- but at least be aware when you're buying a copy.

Over the weekend I say a Walther P99 Italian made folding knife. Cheaply made peice of junk. I don't know if the others are cheaply made, but I did see a Junglee Shogun folder. It had a thin AUS-10 blade, but I didn't like the feel of the light Zytel handle and one thin liner. I would have preferred the Zytel around steel liners like on the old Bencmade Panther.

I own two Junglee "Babylon" spike-style folders.
Both quality pieces, and will take a finger off fast!
Also have a "Baby Hattori" fighter. Impressive, and priced
lower then "SOG" brand.

It was my Junglee Babylon that helped form my negative opinion of Junglee blades. The knife opens hard, and catches halfway through the opening cycle. Its pocket clip shifts back and forth, too, no matter how tight it's dogged down. Not what I consider a quality folder; if I hadn't snagged it on a deep discount, I would feel ripped off.

Related note: Picked up the latest James Bond novel in the bookstore and thumbed through it; Bond is equipped with a Walther P99 Tactical Knife! Guess it's good enough for fictional superspies, at least. :)

Razor,

I note the same half-hitch, on opening, but I'm not
about to try any quick-draws, with this piece.:)

I got a few Gutmann kitchen knives and like them. They have been making them since 1947. The knives are XXXtra sharp VG steel and made in Seki City Japan. The medium hard rubber handles are pretty nice for the price.
Ordered them here : http://chefdepot.net/gutmann.htm

I have several Walther knives: Mach Tac machete, PP fixed blade, Back-Up fixed blade, Hammerhead fixed blade and not one but two Black Tac folders. All are made in China except for the Hammerhead, which was made in Taiwan, and all are 440(A?) except the PP, which is 440C. At the time I bought them, I owned one or two Walther guns and really just liked the designs despite knowing they were not going to be high quality knives. Having said that, none of them are the turds I expected them to be, and they're definitely better than any of the Winchester, Remington and S&W knives I've encountered over the years. In fact, if not for its extremely pointy glass breaker, I'd consider EDCing the Black Tac. The sheaths are of about the same style and quality as on a Chinese Cold Steel, which is to say functional if not exactly worth bragging about.

In other words, a person could do worse in the $15-25 range, but sure could do better too.

I have owned one Junglee, the Venom. Sweet knife, especially considering the $40 price tag. My only complaints were that the pocket clip rides high, and the clip screws were horrible. Find a low rider clip that fits with better screws, and you have a sweet knife.

I also thought that Junglee was closed?

Edit: Good lord look at that necro. Over a decade later to pull it up.
